The Carlsbad Marathon - runners on the Coast Road 2008The famed Carlsbad Marathon is one week from today, on Sunday January 25.

The Carlsbad Marathon has garnered quite the reputation as a world class marathon, and with the course following a good part of the coastline with spectacular views, its popularity for both participants and onlookers is easily understood.

The race begins at 6 am (gag) at the Westfield Shopping Plaza at El Camino Real and the 78 freeway in northeast Carlsbad. Only 1500 participants are allowed, and the pace must be at 13:44-minutes-mile or you will be redirected part way through the course to the finish via an alternate route. That gives you a good idea of the caliber of the runners in this race.

Here's the course

There is a half marathon as well, but both events are sold out. Why not stop by to cheer the participants. One great place to watch is at the junction of La Costa Avenue and the Coast Highway - this is a turn around point at they head for the finish.

Be aware that there will be a number of road closings, including the Coast Highway, so plan accordingly.

Jeff, I think these marathons are great! Unfortunately I didn't get involved when I was young and agile. Love this area and the beautiful ocean. Great localism post. ;-)

Jeff one of the Connecticut ActiveRainers, Dan Cummings, "Connecticuts Running Realtor", runs in 5K's all the time and last year ran in his first Marathon.  He even traveled to the West Coast for one of the races.  I wonder if he knew about this one???

Hi Jeff, I met a client this week and he and his wife are their mid 70's. He runs every day and ran in the Boston Marathon 4 times. What is so amazing is that he didn't start running until he was turning 50. I will pass this event on to him in the event he would like to attend. You do such a nice job on these posts.

I just bet that you really miss all this cold snow we're having out on the east coast. It must get boring with nothing but sun all the time!

Bill - well I am not a runner, but if I were THIS would be a place I would enjoy doing a marathon. Hawaii too.

Gary - good for you. I can't even imagine doing a half, let alone a full. Best of luck with your training.

Patricia - oh, yes. I am sure our road closures do not even begin to compare. Good luck and have fun tomorrow. We will be watching the TV all evening at our neighbor's inaugural "ball"

Thanks, Teri. I personally just don't like running all that much. Give my a bicycle and i am happy, especially riding along this coastline.

George - if Dan pays attention to marathons he would know about it. It is pretty well known as I understand.

William - I am incredibly impressed. I cannot imagine. Thanks for the compliment.

Monika - ha. You lost the bet. :) Actually it is not always sunny and warm, but it is usually at least 55 in the winter during the day, and no colder than 40 at night. Not too hard to take after living in NE.
