Are you prepared to have a new attitude for 2009 and beyond? What changes will you have to make to see this through? The time has come for us all to examine the way we interact with each other on a personal and business level. We could all use a little tweaking.

As Americans we have taken our eye off the ball. The open partisan bickering by politicians over the years has created a rivalry. Much like the rivalry you often see between towns and their respective sporting events. There is much more that bonds us than separates us. That is the common goal we should all strive for.

Real Estate is often like that as well. How often have we found ourselves picking apart an offer received over the smallest inconsistencies. Have you found yourself taking a strong adversarial position instead of looking for the positive?

What attitudes do most Seller's start with when hearing of an offer on their property? I once had the opportunity to sit inside the room where a Seller who was reviewing two offers being presented by his listing Agent.

The Agent had obviously spent some time pouring over the offer prior to presentation. There were several things about the offer that needed tweaking and a few items that would have to be eliminated. It was obviously not a well crafted offer.

The Agent's presentation began almost apologetic and peppered with a high amount of criticism. He pointed out all of the flaws this offer contained and what he felt of the other Agent.

The Seller looked his Agent straight in the eye and asked " Could we just get to the substance of the offer ? "

The Seller had been sold on his Agent's abilities when listing the property. This was not the time or place to slam others while putting his self on a pedestal. Yet this goes on daily.

Is it not time for a new ‘tude? Do not stoop down to that lower level. Step up and elevate others with you. You can't imagine how much better you will feel and how much better others will perceive you.

Hi Herb, I am not political and never understand why all the political bickering and ill will goes on.  I also don't understand why some agents seem to enjoy being adversarial.~

Living in Washington DC and seeing the energy that is flooding the city makes me hope that at least for a few months we will have a positive attitude. I agree that we need to focus on productive activities and partnerships rather than trashing each other. That is something nice about Activerain - the opportunity to reach across the country to other agents. Just the fact that we have made it to the 3rd wk of January and still talking about positive change augurs well.

Hi Herb

The foundation of success and happiness is in the mind of the person and their attitude.

Good luck and success

Shirley,

Thanks for stopping by. It is something isn't it? Those who take adversarial positions right out the gate.

Lise,

It does indeed. Now we need to continue to nourish that feeling.

Herb - "Now, can't we all just get along?" is a statement that comes to mind with your post. Many cannot, and more should try, IMHO. I know I learned quite a bit about this as a board member, how easy it is for some to get caught up in their own position and forget the main focus of the group.

Karen,

It is a problem with Type A personalities. Too many cooks working on one pot of soup.

I know that there are some Realtors who will look up my license to see when I got it and then think that because I've only been in real estate since May 2005, they can browbeat me, talk condescendingly to me, etc. Nope. Doesn't work that way. I've been in customer service for 30 years with Borders Books and Music.

If I can handle the rich snob who comes in and buys an $8 paperback novel, takes it home and reads it, and then brings it back a week later -- with the receipt, spine creases, and dog-eared pages -- telling me that she wants to return it because she didn't like it, I can handle anything the older, experienced, but not necessarily wiser agents can throw at me.

Of course, they could have simply asked me how long I've been a Realtor. I would happily have told them. I find that if such is all they are basing my skills and expertise on, then I have a significant advantage because they are foolhardy to the max.

Herb, your comments can be related to all parts of our lives, not just real estate and politics.  Some feel the need to increase their significance by belittling others achievements, efforts, etc.  It only makes them look small...  Good post.

Jim,

I really like your comment. It is in its self a testimony and witness to the fact that people are able to gain several messages from one single source.

In fact I would say that your comment would have made a fair post as well.

Now as for me I do not make decisions about working with agents based on their expierience. That is of course untill they demonstrate to me by their actions that I need be concerned. I do this because I myself some 21 years ago was a very fast starter and had several great mentors behind me to guide me through the early process.

Joanne,

Thanks for stopping by and your comment. I suspect that most of us are like that and not many that are able to seperate who they are by putting on a completely different face and attitude to meet different situations.

I have always felt that bad-mouthing someone else would reflect poorly on me. No matter what business you are in, sooner or later you'll need to bring up something to your client - an offer - an order gone wrong - some situation that is less than ideal - that will need work to resolve to everyone's satisfaction. Why on Earth would you want to display a negative attitude, thereby spreading that to your client? You set the tone for a person's expectations by your own attitude. I'm doing my best to keep mine positive at all times. Thank you for the good post.

Pangaea,

Thanks for stopping by and sharing your comment. You are spot on.

You have a nice web site with great photo's as well. It was a little difficult to identify your name though as you do not have the type of name that jumps out at you as obvious. Perhaps you might identify yourself in your Bio and or your web site. People love to do business with a named person. Not just that lady at.....
