Computers and your HEALTH!

Did you know that there can be Health hazards from computer use?  We use computers so much these days.  Booking trips, buying cars, researching certain subjects and websites, uploading listings, creating contracts, managing our websites, reading and replying to emails, uploading photos and now you're Blogging too?!?

I did some research and found some great sites and tips to share with all of you!  Your Health is #1!  I hope you'll take a moment to review this, then take the necessary steps to ensure your continued healthy Blogging and computer habits.

If you type "Computers and Health" in google.com, you will find over 226,000,000 pages related to the subject, these are the ones that I found, researched, and wanted to share.  There are some things you can do and should know to reduce your risk of injury.  This is not to alarm you, only to help educate you.

I know that many of you, like myself, spend way too many hours on the computer.  It is now as much a part of our lives as eating.  Add up the minutes you spend eating, and then how many you spend computing.  You try to eat Healthy, so shouldn't you try to compute and Blog healthy too?  You know who you are! (Big Grin)

There are many Health issues that can arise from your improper use of a computer(s).  Your Eyes, body, wrists, neck, back, and even mind can suffer from mis-use.  Your vision can be impaired.  Did you know Carpal Tunnel Syndrome is the most common of health issues that stems from long-term computer usage?  I hope you'll check out these links above, and then Please Blog Smart and Blog Safe!! Enjoy.  :-)

Brad~

Interesting reading and layout is so pleasing to the eye. Thank you. Now I'm "parking" to go off to find out if my very well-being is at risk...

I wish you would have mentioned mental health more.  i am finding that I am becoming quite deranged as I spend time writing and reading posts.

Jane - I hope you find these links helpful.  The main thing is to be sure you have your work-station setup ergonomically correct.  Also, give your eyes a break from the screen once in a while. The links in this post will hopefully help others to reduce the chances of any health hazards. My intentions on this post are to encourage others to be aware of the potential harms that are out there from mis-use of computers.

Teresa - the key is moderation, and vacation.  Did you read my vacation post?  That will help the mental part!! (Big Smile)

Brad - I have actually had to see my chiropractor more - he said I have to stop and stretch I guess I'm getting bloggers back fatigue :-) I just don't know where the time goes - it's your fault and all the great writers and friends - it gets addicting, I'm at it too long.....have to go stretch now. (LOL)

Hey Brad, Great post great resources! I am computer/network technician. There have been days I've spent hours in front of these things (with no breaks). It can take a lot out of you! Especially if you stuck on solving a problem, it's hard to stay ergonomic when your frustrated. By the end of the day your body can ache and feel like you've been run over by a truck. On that same note, I spent a few years in the army...I've hiked many Km with a huge load to carry...but guess what. Sitting in front of a computer all day hurts more! Once again, great post Brad!

Brad,

One time I did get carpel syndrome in my hands from the way I was typing for about a month.

I have seen some of those links you provided.

Cyndee - that is great advise, I hope our readers poke through the comments and see yours. Stretching, closing eyes to relax or looking away from the screen periodically will make a world of difference. I hope you don't have to see your Chptr as often.  Moderation is the key, and knowing when to quit is critical. I am trying to keep my blogging down to 15-45 minutes a day. (we'll see if that's possible) :-) Gotta go stretch before I respond to Luther and Neal!!

(stretch and powernap over!)

Thanks Luther, I know exactly what you mean, I have had those days myself, the hike burns calories, the computer puts em on!  I like the Km hikes, but I like the computer stuff too.  Maybe, I'll invent the virtual computer so we can hike to stay fit, and still blog using voice and virtual typing. hmmmm what a concept!
Thanks for the comment, always appreciated.

Neal - sorry I didn't get these up and out before your unfortunate situation. My company makes it mandatory for us to go through ergonomic training classes for our branches and work stations. Of course, it's all online, my area was a mess and had to be re-organized to prevent me from turning into cyclops computer bio-hazard!  (LOL)  :-)
