Steelers Flag

OK, so I'm not really a Pittsburgh Steelers fan, but, BUT I am keeping my end of a bet that I lost.  This was my penance - to write a glowing post on how awesome the Steelers are and how they should win the Super Bowl.

The only thing, about the only thing, i know about the Steelers is that their colors are black and yellow.  Who would choose those colors anyway??  Alright, I know, I got off course on that remark,  Oh, and one other thing I know, the mayor of Pittsburgh changed his name from Ravenstahl to 'Steelerstahl' - I'd say he's a FAN, huh?

Steelers Teddy Bear
Back to the Steelers....I will admit that I sought help from fellow Twitter buds, and oh boy did they come through!  Pictures, videos, folklore, facts, songs, and more.  And I want to thank them for their help, for without that, this post would be pretty bleak.  I'd have to resort to true and total fakery.

Who did I lose this bet to, and what was the bet???  Mr. Idaho, George Tallabas and I made a bet that whichever of our teams made it the furthest in the playoffs would have to write a glowing post on the other's team.  Well, I'm a New England Patriots fan, and George is obviously a Picksburg (hmm) Steelers fan, and guess who lost.....  ;-(

For you George!!!

Pittsburght Steelers Fans on a Float

I've been told that the "Steelers fans are the best in the world".  None other than our very own Carnac sent that missive to me.  Linda Davisis a big Steelers fan herself, even though she lives in New England, where the PATRIOTS are.

Mr. Focus on Fredrick Maryland, Bob Carney, was very kind and helped me out with some great Pittsburgh lore, explaining just what the big deal is with Steeler football.

"Being a Steeler fanmeans so much more than football. It means being from a corner of the world unlike any other. It means being from a place where the people are so tough-minded that they have survived the Homestead strikes, the Johnstown flood and most recently the Etna Floods. These people have the DNA of hard work, in mills and mines, without the necessity of complaint. They live simply, with no frills. They don't have movie stars or fancy cars."

Steeler Football
More on being a Steeler fan -

"Steeler football means so much more than you think. It symbolizes a Diaspora of generations who had the best childhood they could imagine. They ran free without a care or concern in the valleys of those Allegheny Mountains. Their blue-collar world was easy ... there was no one to tell them that they lacked material things. There was no one to tell them that they needed more.

As the steel mills closed and the jobs disappeared, some of these people had to leave. While the world benefits because they spread their Pittsburgh values, they long for their home where things were simpler and more pure. They teach their kids about Jack Lambert, Lynn Swann, Terry Bradshaw, Franco Harris, Jack Ham, L.C. Greenwood, Joe Greene, and Myron Copein hopes of imparting not just the knowledge, but the feeling that they represented.

They are everywhere, those Terrible Towels. They wave, not just for the team, but for the hearts they left behind. They wave in living rooms in Fort Lauderdale and in the bars of Washington, D.C. They wave all the way to the Seattle Superdome! They wave for the Rooney family, whose values mirror our own - loyalty, grit, and humility. They wave for football players like Jerome Bettis and Hines Ward, whose unselfishness and toughness have allowed sports to be about the game and the team.
"

Here's a great Steeler Polka song I was sent - click on the Steelers Monkey below to open up the song:

                                Steelers Monkey

George, I hope your Steelers win, since my Patriots fell by the wayside some time ago!

Here's a few trinkets I found for you on a website where they were marked down for clearance:

Steelers Toothbrush  Steelers Tape Measure  Steelers Hammer

             Steelers Mailbox                Steelers Shower Curtain

This just in - a Steeler Jeep ran over a raven.......   from another fellow Patriot's fan, Jay McGillicuddy!

GO PITTSBURGH STEELERS - ALL THE WAY TO THE SUPER BOWL!!!!!

Love ya George!!   ;-)

Here's a poem about Pennsylvania: It's winter in Pennsylvania And the gentle breezes blow Seventy miles an hour At twenty-five below. Oh, how I love Pennsylvania When the snow's up to your butt You take a breath of winter And your nose gets frozen shut. Yes, the weather here is wonderful So I guess I'll hang around I could never leave Pennsylvania 'Cause I'm frozen to the ground!!

You poor baby...having to write a sports post is bad enough but that it is not about one of our teams is pure torture!

You are a true sport for honoring your obligation.  I am sure this was a very very hard pill to swallow.  I am still in mourning but as many of us say, there is always next year - GO TITANS!!!!

Hi Monika - the reason this took me so long was that I just knew nothing about the Steelers and I was bummed OUR Patriots never even made it to the playoffs to start with. Still bummed about that..... ;-(

Hi Monika - yeah, when I saw what it was when he sent it, I got grossed out a bit, and wondered if I should put it up there. I did! I don't have a toolbar on my comments, so I can't do more than one per box or they just run together like a wall-of-words..... ugh. Ann

Ann, I'm rooting for the Steelers now that the Eagles are out of it. (I cannot root for the Cardinals after the beating they took in Foxboro- how did THEY get further than the Patriots???) At least I can relax and enjoy the game this year, sigh.....

You really should be proud of yourself and George really got his debt paid in full!  You did a fabulous job!  I can only imagine what this post would have been like if it were the Patriots you were writing about.  I don't follow football at all and I know nothing about the super bowl, but just minutes before checking in to AR, I received an email from by web designer, who lives in Arizona, announcing his excitement at the Cardinals going to the super bowl.  According to him, it has been a 61 year losing streak.  I guess the folks in Arizonia are freaking out big time!  All I have to compare it to is the Sox winning and how crazy we all were.  Great job, Ann.

Hi Jennifer - you knew the Patriots, Super Bowl Patriots, wouldn't even make it into the Playoffs?!?!?!

Hi Kay - no doubt, he's totally absorbed in the game.  I sent him the tweet on Twitter, and told him he needs to come check this out or I'm going to delete it.  I see he's still not here....  ;-)

Hi Debbie - if the Patriots aren't playing, it just doesn't grab my attention very much.  No clue how the Cardinals got as far as they did, especially over the Patriots!

Hi Bill - he is fortunate he wasn't the one writing a 'penance' post on our beloved Patriots for sure!

Hi Sharon - I do wish I had not had to write this post, but at least I had fun with the images and links - the eggs, the eggs!  ;-)

Hi Linda - it is gross, isn't it? And to think it came from Jay no less!

Hey Chris - since I learned about them from you, did you check my little hidden surprises?  ;-)   And no, it's not over yet, but it's pretty close to being over 23 - 14 Steelers, with 4 minutes to go.

Thanks for the comments!
Ann

Ann you are a person of your word.  The Steelers have a great history, but it is just not the same without the Patriots being in it this year.  Just looked at the score and the Steelers are up 23 - 14 with less then 4 minutes to go in this game.

My son & I are Patriots Fans too!  Thanks for rewarding George with this Penance!  I'm proud of you for keeping your word! George now has his yellow towel hanging on the office door, which I'm just about ready to write a new policy about, but we'll let him gloat until the Cardinals beat those Steelers...  ;) Smiles!

P.S.  Only in Pittsburgh do they decorate a tree for their football team.  That's my sister Diane leading the charge.

Well gosh, I didn't realize so many new comments had come in on this post!!  Thanks everyone for reading and for commenting!

George - you are welcome, however I warn you I won't lose next time I make this kind of bet!! ;-)

Sonny - there are most assuredly some Steeler fans around, like George!

Josh - I don't think I could ever write that particular post, although my dad is a huge Yankees fan and Bear was also a hard-core Yankees fan.

Candace - you and George will have to duke it out over this Super Bowl!

Monika - yep, next year will be the Patriots again for sure!!  Then we'll see who'll be writing a 'penance' post then....

Well Don - we've got some great Patriots' fans here and we'll all be rooting them on in next year's Super Bowl.  Too funny - an office policy about yellow towels - I'd be wanting one of those, too, if I were in the office next to him!  ;-)

Tracy - it wasn't easy, that's for sure.  I had to solicit help from friends, otherwise, not sure what on earth would have shown up in this post.  Patriots next year!  Your Panthers do have nice colors for their uniforms...  ;-)

@gotbob - I'm glad you enjoyed those little hidden goodies!  I had fun doing those, not sure Mr. Steelers even saw them though.  Thanks for your help with this post!

@LindaDavis - thanks for letting me use that picture, and Steelers having their own decorated trees shows truefan support.  Congrats on your team making it to the Super Bowl!

Gena - this post was hard for me to do and I drug my feet doing it, too.  I should have had it up before the playoffs even started, but I just didn't have the spark to do it.  But a bet is a bet, and so here it is, just for George.  Glad you liked those hidden little goodies!

Chuck - good luck with your Cardinals, and may you never have to write a post like this!  ;-)

Thanks for the comments!

Hi Terry - if there are that many pulling for the Steelers, then I hope they get the win they want.  I'll watch the game but it won't be as interesting to me since I'm neutral on both teams playing.

Hi Kathy and Linda - I had a lot of fun with this post, even though I would rather it have been George writing about the Patriots instead of me having to write about his Steelers.  The eggs - those were the most fun of all, and I think a lot of people completely missed seeing them...  ;-(
