Me, a couple days ago:
For the past month or so I have been carrying on a rather intense relationship with WPMU (WordPress Multiple User).
It started with the idea of using MU for a "community" of single property websites. And I actually think ~that~ idea has worked out fairly well. My single property website community has a small selection of themes I specially customized for single property sites, it has some standardized pages that I place in each site....
But then it seemed to me that I could also create a MU community for the local neighborhood. (I focused on Edublogs as the pinnacle of this concept. Although Active Rain itself can also be considered an example of the blog community concept.)
But my little project became an obsession. :-0
So far, I learned some tricks to run MU on GoDaddy.
I learned that Internet Explorer doesn't always play nice with the MU wp-signup.php code. I learned I am not smart enough to fix it. (So I kludged around it using a Google Doc signup form.)
For the curious, here is the standard wp-signup.php form: http://nelanews.net/wp-signup.php It will open just fine in Firefox. Most versions of Internet Explorer will cough up a 404 error.
Today, January 19, I officially declare these two MU communities: NELANEWS.NET (for the local community)and BOB-TAYLOR.NET (for our agents) D.O.N.E. and F.I.N.I.S.H.E.D.
Yeah, I'll cycle back in a few months and set up the domain mapping, and see if I can fix that dratted IE bug, but for now, they are both completely functional just like they are, and sometime before the end of the week, I will announce them to the world.
Who knows, maybe now my Active Rain firends will see a little more of me again. :-)
I bow down- I love you for sharing and I look forward to seeing your hard work pay off- make the reveal a good one! cw
