In cities, with museums, you expect lots of statues, busts, plaques and reminders thru monuments of past US presidents. In small towns it is extra special considering the cost. In Houlton Maine George Washington, a mason is proudly at the mouth of Market Square. As our first president and going thru all the struggles as our nation's first Commander in Chief, you wonder what he would think of the celebration in Washington DC. As the We Are One concert unfolded, you had to wonder what Abe Lincoln would be thinking, saying as 250,000 folks or so gather for the festivities on the steps in front of him? What president or national historic news maker(s) is honored and a part of your home town?
Since we have had 3 presidents from our area... Jefferson, Madison and Monroe we certainly do!!!
Your friend in Charlottesville, VA
Charles McDonald
Charles you area must be rich in it. Actually was one of the largest states for contributing to the Civil War effort and I read somewhere Sherman Maine..the little town in Aroostook County sent among the most of their young men to help end the war between the states.
East Tennessee has been the home of Al Gore, Fred Thompson, and James White (a Revolutionary War hero) as far as political figures. We are also the home of Alex Haley and have an enormous bronze statue of him in one of our local parks.
Rich..you need a few of your own on your front lawn. I'll let your wife know I know what you really want for Christmas this year.
