Every year our community loses thousands of trees to disease and development.  Trees help improve our air and water quality, lower energy costs, and remove carbon dioxide from the air.

TreeFest, an annual giveaway of tree seedlings, will be held on January 23rd from 10am to 7pm and January 24th from 10am to 6pm at in the JC Penney wing inside Independence Mall.

Local residents are invited to pick up 5 free tree seedlings to take home and plant on their property during TreeFest, an event that has provided a free source of seedlings to the public since 1997. This year, almost 15,000 tree seedlings will be given away.

Available tree species include: Bald cypress, Black walnut, Crape myrtle, Eastern red cedar, Flowering dogwood, Green ash, Live oak, Longleaf pine, Persimmon, Redbud, River birch, Shumard oak, Southern oak, Swamp black gum, Swamp chestnut oak, and Wild plum. Please note: species availability is subject to change without notice and are available first come, first serve.

The trees are bare-root seedlings grown in Goldsboro at the NC Forest Service Nursery. They will need to be kept moist and planted as soon as possible; ideally the same weekend as TreeFest.

The TreeFest Committee organizes the event, and sponsors include Progress Energy, North Carolina Forest Service, Keep America Beautiful of New Hanover County, New Hanover County Cooperative Extension, New Hanover County Parks Department, Star-News, New Hanover Soil and Water Conservation District, City of Wilmington, and Independence Mall.
