Plans are being made to make the Rail Runner service an even bigger plus for Los Lunas and surrounding areas, according to a report in the Valencia County News Bulletin this morning.

During the Los Lunas Village Council meeting last Thursday, it was announced that an advisory board of Los Lunas residents was being appointed to consider ways the Rail Runner station in Los Lunas might help further the economic and transportation goals of t he village. It is reported that there is already great ridership in the Los Lunas area, and it is expected that this will only  get better as traffic in and out of Albuquerque gets worse!

Some ideas that were brought up at the meeting include:

  • a possible shuttle system from the station to local restaurants and businesses
  • land use plannning encouraging a combination of residential and commercial areas
  • encouraging walking and bicycling, plus an attempt to offer easy access to local businesses and places of employment.

As the price of gasoline keeps rising, and the traffic along I-25 into Albuquerque gets more and more congested, having the Rail Runner system provide really effective transportation to and from Valencia County will be increasingly important to our lifestyles here in Valencia County, as well as doing our bit to help the environment.
