Martin Luther King Day - a Federal Holiday - did you work today ?

By
Real Estate Agent with The Somers Team at KW Philadelphia

Every Federal Holiday is a big day to celebrate and to take a moment to appreciate the significance of each event.  Martin Luther King Jr Day is one of three federal holidays to commemorate an individual person and has tremendous meaning to our country.

Martin Luther King DayAs a Realtor, I smile when the Holidays come as the rest of the country seems to have the day off, yet we are still working !  I remember when I first became a Realtor one of the benefits was that you can choose your own hours.  Which is true... I guess.  For the most part however, we work all the time, including Holidays.  We were at the office today negotiating some deals that came in on 2 of our listings as "Time is of the essence" !

We try to incorporate more time off and more breaks to have more balance in our professional lives.  It is a challenge but something we are getting a little better at... but have much work to do ! It is one of our goals for 2009.

What about your schedule ?  How are you achieving balance in your career ?

Christopher & Stephanie,

I agree with you about designated "holidays", however as independent contractors we can declare our own holiday.  Problem is most of us work all the time.  Some of us burn out and the rest become restless or just fade away.

I spoke at a sparsely attended sales meeting this morning.  Instead of 25 agents there were only 10.  Good meetings can be small or large.  It is what we take with us and put in practice.

Have a great day!

It depends what you call "work": I did some work, but took note also that I went shopping(where people were working more so than I did), signed up at a new gym-where a guy and gal were working, and noted many people make dental/doctor appts today as well.

I maybe spent 3-4 hours really doing work, which isn't much.

I had floor from 12 - 3 and I showed property at around 4:30!

As to balance between work and play...can't say there is much of that, to be honest.  If I am not at the office or showing property, I am on the internet working on my website or writing a blog for SEO!  I definitely need to make a point to achieve some better balance and quit being such a workaholic!

Gary - LOL, no mail today !  Those govt jobs are quite nice - many years ago my first job was with the Federal Govt !  Nice benefit package too !!

Mary - The smaller meetings are typically the best ones !  Will look you up on Linkedin !

Michael - Not bad at all !  Is good you got some other things done where other folks were working too.

Angela - Balance is so important !  We are also workaholics... it is insane !  We have done better by taking some nice breas here and there.  The paradox with that balance is that I think work production can be even higher - by being more efficient : )

Holidays are always work days for me.  Everybody else is off work so they wanna go out and look at houses.  I can't blame them.  If I was them I would do the same thing.

Hey you two!  I quasi worked today. Whenever a holiday comes up, I try not to be full force (unless I have good reason to, I sure wouldn't turn down writing an offer) but since we are basically always working, I take the opportunity to relax, just a bit if I can. I worked today but was casual and played catch up.

Heck yeah I was working today. I work when others are off, that's my schedule. Many agents in my office have family things going on right after school or work so I pick up those hours. They are grateful for the time to be with their families and I'm thrilled to have the busy times. Sometimes being single does pay off! -S

Hello hello - Yes we worked here in New York city, I think most of the people worked in New York today, it is a real joke when I hear people talk about long 3 day weekend, it is almost non-existing for us. :-)

I worked today - oh well since it is 11:39 and I am just now getting to blogging - I guess maybe that says something. This "off" days are wonderful to get extra things (MORE things) done.

Chris, It's funny, there is so much going on that I feel like I'm working--even when I'm not.  Just busy days but I'd rather that anytime then boredom :)

Hi Chris and Stephanie...the one I struggle with is no work on the Sabbath...I don't do open houses as much as I used to; luckily there are so many hungry agents they will do them for me!  But, it is hard to take a few hours off, let alone a whole day.
