A Thank You to Dr. Martin Luther King - May Your Vision of Peace and Unity Be Realized

By

With the observance of Dr. Martin Luther King Day comes a lot of reflection.  Reflection on a time when we, as a society, were intolerant and unwilliing to understand the importance of cooperation.  Cooperation by ALL of us.

I have been watching the story of Rosa Parks and doing some thinking.  And, for the most part, that has me marveling at just how far we have come as a country ... and how far we have to go.  I was a small child when Rosa Parks stood up for herself and thousands of others.  I remember it vaguely, but by the time the early 1960s arrived I had a pretty good grip on my opinions.

In the movie there is a scene where Dr. King is delivering a speech in the Holt Street Baptist Church in defense of Rosa Parks' refusal to surrender her seat on the bus.  While listening to the speech I was also hearing the words of our President-Elect.

Barack Obama will be sworn in tomorrow as the President of the United States.  This, in and of itself, is a milestone for so many.   For those in Montgomery, Alabama in 1955 to present day America.  The years have passed, but the tensions still remain in many places.

It's time to put it to rest.  To stop the separation of people based on their skin color, their ethnicity, their financial status, their educational achievements, or their abilities.  There is no room for hatred in the world I live in.  But there is room for understanding.  I don't always agree with everything said about every issue.  That would make me a puppet and I'm far from that.

But, if we allow ourselves the luxury, we can be more objective about our world.  We can improve our own situations and become better human beings.

Life is not about money, success or material things.  Life is about making a mark in the world, and for the better.

On December 5, 1955, Dr. King made this speech at the Holt Street Baptist Church.  One portion of that speech stands out for me, and I have taken the liberty of posting it here.

How far have we come?  How far do we have to go?  Only time will tell.

"And we are not wrong; we are not wrong in what we are doing. (Well) If we are wrong, the Supreme Court of this nation is wrong. (Yes sir) [applause] If we are wrong, the Constitution of the United States is wrong. (Yes) [applause] If we are wrong, God Almighty is wrong. (That's right) [applause] If we are wrong, Jesus of Nazareth was merely a utopian dreamer that never came down to Earth. (Yes) [applause] If we are wrong, justice is a lie (Yes), love has no meaning. [applause] And we are determined here in Montgomery to work and fight until justice runs down like water (Yes), [applause] and righteousness like a mighty stream. (Keep talking) [Applause]"

We are certainly making history in the election of Barack Obama.  And, regardless of your opinion or political affiliation, as Americans we need to step up and do our part to put our country back in shape.  We are all suffering, and it will take all of us to cure that problem.

This is my dream.  I like to think it paralells Dr. King's dream.

Carol - Well said.  We've come very far, yet still have a long way to go.  Today is historic in its significance, as is tomorrow.  In fact, every day is historic in the grand scheme of things.  Seems we always do pretty well at something when we do it together.  It's time we get together to get something done.

Hi Carol,
I agree with Jason "well said".  I always go back to the Golden Rule and if everyone would just follow it....there would be no prejudice, discrimination or lawlessness.  It really is very simple.

Carol, this is a great post...we MUST work together. I am ashamed to say that I have a cousin in her early 40's she lives in the deep south (I won't say where because I don't want to stereotype) who is extremely vocal in her beliefto this day that "when they began the integration process everything went to hell in this country...all because of them damned yankees!" The town where she lives is still very blatently divided, white side of the tracks, black side of the tracks. I was sent away at 13 for sneaking across the tracks to play basketball with my black friends in the early eighties. People broke into my grandmothers home while we were sleeping and tried to kill both Grandma & Grandpa because of my wrong doing.

We have sooooo far to go and I am so thankful to live in a part of the country where we can work, live, love and thrive together...and I do hope that someday it will be that way everywhere!

Thank you for this post Carole. Thank you also for choosing to share it with your friends on Fraiche Aire. I read Martin Luther Kings "I have a Dream" speech today. The power of his words still rings clear and true.

Jason - We have come a long way, but that is no excuse for stopping our progress.  The old saying that there is strength in numbers could not be more accurate than it is today.

Cynthia - The Golden Rule is taught to all of us when we are small children.  Unfortunately there are many that think it doesn't apply to them.  And that, my friend, is where the sadness of the world enters.

Trish - Working together is the only way that our world will improve.  If we all pursued just our own desires, then we would never achieve anything.  I was always the renegade in the tumultuous time of the 60s.  I had black friends and playmates and I refused to stay away from them because they weren't the same color.  In those days that had many costs attached to it ... and I paid them.  But I maintained my friendships - bruises and all.  I have two mixed race God-children that I would walk through fire for - and have had to 'educate' come folks over the last 20 years (the oldest is now 20!  Ugh!) that these girls are neither black or white - they are children.  Prejudice is, IMO, a clinical condition that should be able to be treated with medication.  What other rationalization could there be for such a hateful trait?

Lola - The "I Have a Dream" speech is powerful, but after reading (and listening to) the speech given in the Holt Street church I am inclined to think that that speech was far more empowering.  Dr. King was one of history's all time great personalities.  It's so sad that his initial messages were so distorted with racial hatred.

Kate, Today was a day of reflection for many of us--and tomorrow for renewed hope and blessings. I loved your line: "Life is not about money, success or material things. Life is about making a mark in the world and for the better." Good time for ALL of us to remember that!

Hi Carol... I think that, as Bob Dylan sang, The times, they are a changin'" and I hope that President Obama's tenure only brings us to new heights and to greater things!  I am excited by the prospects!

Carol, as much as I would like to see peace on Earth, I really do not think that it is something that will transpire in our time here.

Your thoughts and aspirations for individuals, our country, and society as a whole are shared by me and most Americans. If people could and would actually just rejoice in our differences that make us so special then the world would really change. I believe I may have seen that today with Barak Obama's inauguration.

Carole - If we, some of the most intelligent beings in the world, could just remember the simple premise of mutual respect ... ohhhhh what a world we would have.

Kate - You know it!

Steve - Yes - they are a changin'!  And we have needed sweeping change for so long ...

Danny - Probably not in my lifetime either.  But if we can keep our eyes on the ball, and help future generations to focus ...

Rich - I actually cried during his inaugural address.  Watching the faces of hope was a little overwhelming.

Carol,

The world is certainly a better place because of his beliefs and efforts.....and yesterday's swearing in of our new President is the result of his life long dream.

Dan - The annual celebration of Dr. King's birth always serves to remind us that we have a duty to each other - to be fair and respectful, to be honest and kind, and to be accepting and understanding.  None of those duties costs any of us a dime, yet the power of each is priceless.

Eli - And you know how I feel about this kind of thing.  Perhaps that's why we are so 'in sync' with what we want for this world.  God bless you, my dear friend.  We can get there - if we do it together.
