Solomons Island

The resort town of Solomons is located in Calvert County & is approximately 55 miles from Washington, DC and less than an hour drive from the Annapolis, Maryland area.

Driving the mostly rural length of Calvert County is an easy drive to arrive in Solomons.  There are a few intersections and strip malls as you pass through the towns of Dunkirk & Prince Frederick.  Otherwise, you will see the beautiful countryside of gently rolling fields and woodlands with steep-roofed tobacco barns, mostly weathered gray, reminding residents & visitors alike of the region's deep-rooted agricutural heritage.

Solomons Island is a major boating center located at the mouth of the Patuxent River, in southern Calvert County.  Solomons offers several full service marinas, intriguing antique, gift & specialty shops, galleries, restaurants, museums, and a boardwalk overlooking the Patuxent.  Take a walk along the Riverwalk, and enjoy wonderful views of the Patuxent River.

There are several Solomons Island attractions for visitors & local residents, such as the Calvert Marine Museum which features exhibits designed to interpret the estuarine biology of the Chesapeake Bay & Patuxent River.  The museum includes a discovery room for children, The Drum Point Lighthouse & also a pair of river otters named Bubble & Squeak which is a favorite attraction at the museum.

If you would like to get out on the water, board the Wm. B. Tennison for a leisurely one hour cruise around Solomons harbor and the Patuxent River.  You will sail the Solomons inner harbor, see Solomons Island and the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory, cruise past the U.S. Naval Recreation Center and pass under the Governor Thomas Johnson Bridge. Cruises depart from the Calvert Marine Museum dock.

Annmarie Garden Sculpture Park & Arts Center is a 30 acre park located on the shores of the St. John Creek.  The Garden features a shady walking path, a new Arts Building and a Studio School, as well as exhibits, daily activities, programs, events & classes.  Smooth, user-friendly pathways curve through the grounds, inviting strollers and roller-bladers alike to visit at their own pace.  Enjoy an exquisite collection of outdoor sculpture, picnickers are welcome to settle in virtually anywhere, there are over a dozen "Talking Benches" along the way, each depicting a plant specific to southern Maryland.....dogwood, loblolly, tobacco & pawpaw.

On the tip of Solomons Island, the University of Maryland operates the Chesapeake Biological Laboratory Visitors Center.  The center is open Tuesdays through Sundays from 10am to 4pm and gives visitors an opportunity to learn more about the ecology and natural resources of the Chesapeake Bay.

Finally, if you are feeling adventuresome, discover fossils at the nearby Calvert Cliffs.  The Cliffs can be accessed through Calvert Cliffs State Park or Flag Pond Nature Park.

Discover Solomons......by boat or vehicle!  Once you visit, you will return often!
