I will be the first to admit that I LOVE BOLD COLOR! I am a cedar chest red and Gold kind of girl! While these colors are rich and beautiful, they are not appropriate when you are selling your home.

I remember, years ago, my sister in law and I went to look at model homes. The models were decorated beautifully and each home had a different color scheme. The largest and what I thought to be the most beautiful home and layout was decorated in blues, terracotta and pale yellows. GORGEOUS, gleaming dark oak floors and off white cabinetry throughout.

Sound nice, right? MY SISTER IN LAW COULD NOT SEE PAST THE BLUES AND TERRACOTTA'S! She hated the color scheme and no matter how hard we tried to tell her to consider the layout, etc. SHE WAS DONE! Does that seem extreme to you?

Why take the chance? When selling your home it is always best to paint your walls a neutral color. Make your home the STAR, not your decor. In this house that we just staged the LR and DR area were one large space. The buyer had a different color and floor in each room which separated the space making each look smaller than they are.

Here is what we did:

BEFORE walls were dark green which conflicted with the blue carpeting.

Phyllis, looks great. You definitely added an air of elegance to the dining room. The mirror looks great.

Colour is so important - I watched an episode of "The Unsellables" - they had this beautiful home to work on - every room on the main floor had bold coloured paint on the walls - each one a different colour.  Once the rooms were repainted, the entire main floor looked so much larger, and you could actually pay attention to the space and architectural details without being bombarded by bold colours bouncing off the walls.

Phyllis,

So right! Neutral paint colors, will always reach a broader spectrum of potential buyers.  Bold colors tend to be more personalized and can turn away many buyers who will not be able to see beyond the color in order to view the homes true potential!  As for your sister-in-law, she just may have missed out on a great house! Sellers really do need to consider this when selling!

I agree that it is important. I do try to console my sellers by confiding that if I ever prepare my own house for sale, I will definitely have to repaint. Care to guess what color my own accent walls are?

Okay, I'll fess up and include a photo just so you know I'm not kidding. My accent walls are ACID GREEN!! How we live in our homes and how we sell our homes are two different things, right? Hey, I love, love, love them! Everyone who comes over loves them too .... but then they aren't considering living here! LOL.

I like the green walls so much but they do clash with the blue carpet.

Phyllis you are so right . You know we do as much or as little as client wants , but when they dont want to remove the wallpaper is a bad thing. You neutralized the the way it should be. Im in the process of doing that to my place.

The blue carpet certainly needed to be tuned down and the paint helped that.  The new curtains really helped along with the removal of the shelves.  Good job!
