I've seen a few presidential inaugurations over my 28 years. I even marched in President Clinton's Inaugural Parade in 1997. I haven't seen an inauguration or a presidency with so much hope and interest. Let's celebrate the day and the coming "New Birth of Freedom" with some curious facts about today and Presidential Inaugurations from the past. Feel free to share any amazing facts, stories, or words about this historic day.
Presidential Inaugurations and Presidential Facts of Old
Abraham Lincoln was the tallest U.S. President at 6′4″ and the first to include African-Americans in his parade in 1865.
Women were first included in the inaugural parade in 1917 at Woodrow Wilson's second inauguration.
The U.S. Marine Band has played at every presidential inauguration since 1801 when Thomas Jefferson was the first and only president to walk to and from his inauguration.
Bill Clinton attended 14 inauguration balls...that's what I call ‘ball-hopping.'
In 1949, Harry Truman's inauguration was the first to be televised.
The first ceremony on the Internet was Bill Clinton's second inauguration in 1997 (that's the parade I marched in).
FDR and Eleanor began the modern tradition of morning worship service by attending St. John's Church.
The 20th Amendment to the Constitution (1933) change the inaugural date from a day in March...to January 20th. Hey cool, 20th Amendment, January 20th! That's easy to remember.
The Inauguration of Barack Obama
Our 44th president, Barack Obama will be sworn in using the same Bible that President Lincoln used in his 1853 Inaugural swearing in. Check out the video.

The security force for Obama's inauguration is greater than that which is currently deployed in Afghanistan. 30,000 National Guard troops, about 1,000 FBI agents, 8,000 police officers from as far away as Chicago, hundreds of TSA screeners, and a number of completely covert and undisclosed resources and agencies. 58 agencies are known to be involved.
Because millions of people will be expected in and around the inauguration activities, cell phone companies have set up additional temporary towers to help cover the massive data overload that is expected.
According to authorities, travel will be extremely difficult in Washington D.C. Expect ‘crush-level' crowds.
The platform used for the inauguration will hold more than 1,600 people. Including the President and Vice-President Elects and their families, cabinet members, members of congress, and hundreds more. Bleachers above the platform will hold another 1,000 including choirs and guests. I hope all that's sturdy.
