Sooooooooo... why is a 1/2 Irish, 1/2 French Canadian so excited about the election of an American president??? Two words, hope & change!

Since September 11th, 2001 we've all been through a lot. The world seems to have bought a one way ticket to hell with no way back. For many of us... Americans, Canadians, Europeans, etc... today feels different.

There is something about President Obama that gives us hope and a glimpse into better days ahead, new things to come.

I'm an optimist by nature and have enough life experience to know that no matter how bad things get, eventually they turn around. January 20th, 2009 feels like one of those pivotal moments.

It's not just because Barack Obama is young, bright, fresh or so freekin' articulate, it's because I can really relate to how he does things. He's in touch with how the world works and communicates and he's made it perfectly clear that it won't be "business as usual" in Washington.

The fact is that when the U.S. sneezes, the rest of us get a cold. So like you, I'm hopeful, happy and excited that you/we have a new President.

So what does any of this have to do with marketing? One of the things that really got my attention during the election campaign was how Barack Obama understood and used social media to raise funds, to reach out, connect and get his message across to so many people in so many ways. We could all learn a few lessons from his online marketing strategies.

I was reading what you said and I had a feeling what Obama said would be for once felt in a good way throughout the world. I think for the past however many years when our president spoke it only fueled the fire of hatred. I do feel Obama is in touch. He is in touch with what I think and thought. He brought up every issue I have with our government and its role in the world. He brought up every worry and fear I have and offered a real solution. A real solution. A solution with morality and character and without violence. That is change. Thanks for mentioning me in this article as well. I appreciate it!

It is so nice to have a President who is a gifted speaker. I've heard people speak in negative ways about how much is being made about 'hope' as if the idea of 'hope' can't do any real good against the problems we face. While the problems we face are very real and substantial , peoples fear and lack of confidence in our economy are a factor. This is where a little 'hope' can really help.

Hi Marti,

I received daily e-mails from Obama's office.  They tried to keep the people informed and that's really the way it should be.

Being an American Canadian now, I really appreciate the change occuring today in the cultural diversity and seeing over 2 million people at the U.S. Capitol....  Even the people who had tickets, but weren't allowed to go and see the President, decided to clean up the area where they were.  They did something right!!   Today was an AWESOME historical DAY!!!!

Marti, You seem like a smart person, I don't know why I just feel it because of some of the post I have read. But do you or anyone reading think that one man (unless he is a dictator) can change Washington DC. I the last 48 years no one has whether you're a Republican ( Regan came close) or a Democrat ( Clinton came close) not one thing has or is going to change. Congress makes the laws and allows them to be broken. Until Congress is fixed (or hung) nothing is going to change.

Now Obama has within his power to change, he has all the votes needed to run the country as a dictator and no opposition from the Republicans because there cannot even be a filibuster. For example (far fetched but true) he could say I want sell California, with the Democratic congress and no filibuster he can do it unless the Democratic congress says no. So if he wants to give every American a billion dollars he can unless the Democratic congress says no. He could straighten out this mess with one stroke of a pen tomorrow. The reason he want is because that is not how Washington works.

In the next 100 days, that is what we give an incoming President time to do his magic, nothing will have changed, we will still be blaming BUSH just like they blamed Clinton.

What say you America.

Marti!  I'm with you!  We are on the same vibe.  I can't believe how much doom and gloom people are spouting.  After today, you can't help but feel hopeful and feel good.  If the naysayers would simply change their outlook on the situation and give hope a chance, our world would definitely be a better place.  I guess they are just used to the negativity of the past administration.  There's nothing wrong with positivity people and change is good.

Marti - Colorful post as usual, and I agree that it's refreshing to see a president who embraces technology. However, after telling everyone that it's not going to be business as usual, he appointed mostly Clinton cabinet members t his staff. So in a lot of ways it may look like the thrid term of the Clinton administration.

That's not a good sign for the real estate industry. I attribute his administration to giving teeth to the communiity reinvestment act. Fannie May was also run by a Clinton cabinet member Frankin Raines who managed to stay out of jail after cooking the books in order to receive over $50 million in bonuses while running one of the most profitable companies in the world into bankruptcy.

Having so many Clinton appointees in charge does not look like change to me.

One of the big points for me that President Obama said (and I wrote it down at the time) was "choose hope over fear".  We all have the ablility to make that choice and to act accordingly.  I am feeling energized and optomistic.  I believe that " a change is gonna come ".  It will be an interesting ride.

Kathy... optimism really sums it up, I'm not naive in any sense of the word but this change was long overdue.

Linda... we can only hope, and right now that seems to be in abundance.

It is all about switching that little switch from pessimism to optimism.  It is just a little switch and a 2 year old can turn it on.......

We shall see...I guess I'm the only one here that believes bigger government and the governmet spending our way out of reessions is bad. It may look rosey in the short term but all the spending WILL come back to haunt us later. Hope you are ready.

I'm happy that today he put a freeze on salaries for the white house staff.  That's a step in the right direction.

Marti, I too admire the way that President Obama utilized all types of social media to reach out to America and convey his message of hope and change.  Great post with some terrific insights as always.  I need to also chat with you about some design work I need done.  Will touch base with you about that soon.  Take care and happy blogging!

Marti,

Yes the world needs something to be happy about, and if it is an American President all the better.

President Obama has, make no doubt about it, a long hard road. People must stay by him, for he will carry a great burden. I think he feels a calling, to do all he can. He is bright and articulate as any one I every seen. Let's hope, politics doesn't hold back his hopes and dreams.

Marti, it was interesting to hear the point of view of someone outside the US. "When the US sneezes..." is an apt observation. It was clear when our markets tanked, and the rest of the world experienced the ripple effect. Hopefully, as we recover, so too will everyone else.

Hi Marti-great post and I too have been feeling awesome and have spent a great deal reading...educating myself and really appreciating the World Hope feeling!  President Obama is fresh and unique...and truly reminds me of JFK!  People tend to judge too quickly...even in 100 days its not enough...the damage has been going on for years and years!

I've been doing a lot of reading outside the rain..its great because I need your list more than ever!  xoxo

So far I'm very impressed by his ability to read the pulse of the nation. He also appears to be rather collected and willing to take on the challenge. One week down and a few to go he's looking good to me.

Marti, thanks for the wealth of informaion you provided and touched by your comments about my man, Obama... Oh, yes, I am an Obamacrat!  So much so that on the day before the inauguration I was in Calgary teaching a staging class and when in the middle of it one of my wonderful Canadian students reminded me that tomorrow was the day.. I burst into tears and had a hard time getting back my professional composure...  OK, I felt like an idiot, but they understood and were kind to there blubbering idiot of an American instructor...  Thanks to all the Canadians who have had nothing but encouragement over the last year for us as we tried to change history.

Hi marti I am just checking in to see how you are doing. It was Jackson Pollock's birthday earlier this week ( I wrote a post about it even though it has nothing to do with real estate) and I thought about you. I am planning on listening in to the radio show about outside blogs today. I am thinking I want to do it but want to be sure that you would be able to help me customize it as much as possible. I will be in touch with you soon and hope all is well in your world!

Jo... gawd there seems to be a lot of the Irish/French mix around here. ;-)
