In the war against telemarketers it is important to always be prepared. They take classes and learn how to sell theirtelephone aggravatiomn wares, but what do we do? Is there a class for responding to their slick presentations designed to trap us into buying something we don't need? Of course not. Nothing we have been taught in school prepares us for the barrage of ringing telemarketers. They are relentless and hard to avoid.

We need to organize and fight back. My solution is simple, let's band together and collect a prime selection of responses. Maybe if enough of us make their jobs impossible, they will stop calling our cell phones and leave us alone. Here are my TOP 10 Responses; when responding to "I have qualified buyers for your area, can you take on some new business?" You can say...

10) Reply: Nope. More business means I must give up my welfare check.

9) Just a minute, I gotta put you on hold. (then go out to lunch)

8) If you have so many leads, why aren't you working them?

7) Sure how much do you pay an hour? Tell me about your benefit package?

6) Wow! You sound great on the phone, are you single?

5) Cool! This is just what I need, can I do it part time? Will you take a postdated check?

4) Adjust your voice to reflect a 3 year olds voice and reply, "My Mommy doesn't want me talking to strangers."

3) You are with what company? Did you know your company is on the Department of Justice watch list?

2) Sure I am interested but I'm out of budget funds at the present time. Can you call me back later, like February 29th?

1) Click.

My fave: "Do you have a pen?" (telemarketer scrambles for a pen and an easy mark) "Then please scratch my name off your list! Thank you!"

I like Richs also, and I think I will use it. I had this very call a few minutes ago...Dont you want FREE leads in your area, don't you want to make more money???? Just $41 a month and you can have everything FREE..

Then at the end, I get, So you don't want to make more money or get more business? NO!!!!

One sure fire way to get the telemarketer to hang up on you is to ask is it free?

I've told my husband how to handle those telemarketers:
"My wife handles all those decisions and she doesn't live here any more".
That shuts them up long enough to hang up.

Kristal, I do not have any problem in saying NO, and then hanging up if they do not take it for an answer.  But I will have to try Rich's approach with the pen.  Now I can't wait for the next one to call!!!

Kristal,

Love that post.

I just tell them they are now on my reporting list to the national do not call list and then if they continue I hang up and register their name and number on the site.

By the way..you were mentioned in todays blog I wrote.

FIRST BLOG PART II I hope you didn't mind my mention.

Kristal - love these replies and I like Rich's, too.  Carol's got a clever one, too.  I'm going to have to 'practice' these so they roll off my tongue when I get these silly calls!

Turn the call around - see if they know anyone who want to buy or sell real estate. If it's not in your area - refer it out.

Hey guys ~ I love your comments and want to respond to each and every one of them. Right now I am in a hotel room with my hubby and he can't stand when I CLICK on the keyboard while he's trying to sleep.  Since he drove me all the way to Albuquerque today, I will be very nice to him and stop CLICKING right now.

 I'll be back tomorrow!

Keep the comments coming...we must fight back!  :)

I put my home, fax, cells on do not call list....only the people "who are taking a survey" call and I tell them I'm not interested and before they say a word...or maybe they are saying a word but I don't hear while I am gently putting the phone down.  Good for five years.

Great post Krystal,

When I get telemarketing calls I have three ways I handle them. Sometimes I'll use, NO HABLA ENGLES (sic) or W-H-A-T ? or WAIT I DIDN'T CATCH THAT. Once I got a call from an English speaking marketer and when I said NO HABLA ESPANOL, she hung up.

Personally, I talk to telemarketers.  They don't bother me too much.  So far, I have attended two time share presentations, I didn't buy anything, but one gave me a Sony color TV and another provided me and my husband free airfare to San Diego and tickets to Sea World.  (I hope more timeshare people call me!)

I consolidated my student loans from 7% down to 3-point-something because of a telemarketer.  It was a no-cost loan.

My husband bought outstanding medical insurance from a telemarketer, 3 months before I needed some unexpected, major hospitalization.  The insurance payments amounted to about $1100 and I quickly ran up a $400,000 medical bill.  That call was definitely worth it.

I listen to telemarketers because sometimes- SOMETIMES- you can really come out ahead.

Karen - WOW - that's some good stuff you've gotten from actually talking to telemarketers.  Who knew something good really could come from those pesky calls??!?!!?!?  Maybe I ought to adopt a new attitude towards them....hmmmmmm.......
