Wish Us All Well, Will You?

The Historywas made today with Barak Obama becoming the President. There is some irony in the fact that this became the highest point in his political career. I am not sure anyone ever took the oath with their highest accomplishment - just getting to the White House.

We all wish him the best. I hope that we get someone for the long haul, not just to take the office, and rest on this achievement. In the country used to instant gratification, would he be able to keep energizing the impatient nation?

There are a lot of challenges and let this inauguration day be the most difficult day of his presidency. The challenge is that there is a big difference between being a leftist and making decisions that can be very unpopular with his electorate. Will he follow his guts and react to the world the way, which is prudent and practical, whether it goes along or against the ideological or party lines, and get many upset; or follow the ideological and party lines and get into a dangerous disregard of the realities.

Obama is a clever man, but it is inevitable that liberal ideals are to be tested against a harsh and unforgiving reality with little tolerance for indecisiveness and weakness.

Contrary to a common belief, we do not share the same ideals with the rest of the world. We only share them with a small part of that world, mostly Western Europe, and it is not a happy marriage either. Beyond Western Europe, the terms "freedom" and "democracy" often mean different things. And though I do not think it is our job to "export" freedom and democracy, it is our obligation to keep the world safe. Because we can't keep America safe, if we can't get the world safe.

It is a heck of a task. It is no longer a world, where if you do not get into the affairs of others, they do not get into your affairs. Those times have gone. There are people out there whose only goal is to destroy America, Fundamentalism comes from the desperation that they can't compete against America, and thus establish religious and moral superiority, which they claim, so the only way to deal with it is to destroy the competition. It is against America, because our existence is a testament to their failure. They are out to destroy America to prove themselves to their own people.

It is not a matter of being nice or not nice. It is a matter of them being unable to explain why following a superior religion they do not achieve better lives for their people, and America does it. If you can't compete, you need to destroy or accept that they are not the mightiest, the greatest, the smartest, the cleanest...

America is not the problem, it is just the target. The only way not to be the target is to become inferior, to succumb. Thinking that you can square it with talks, with niceties is naive. If they talk, it is because they can't destroy. When they can, they destroy.

Russia, which did not move far from the ways of the Soviet Union, is again turning to brandishing weapons as the way to establish itself in the world as the superpower. Not by economic growth, not by following the path of democratic reforms, but by strengthening the powers in the hands of notoriously familiar secretive organizations. Russia's pressure to all its neighbors - former Soviet Republics, is a growing cause of tension and is a hot spot on the World's map.

China with its phenomenal economic growth and lagging democratic reforms is another problematic area, and looks like this is our financier. Not of our choice.

But this is all tomorrow. Today is the day of celebration, the toughest day in the life of the new president ... so far.

We better wish us all well.

Jon, we are in a rough uphill battle for sure.  The idea that Iraq was going to embrace democracy overnight was a far stretch.  And the rest of the world, as you point out only cares about their own self interests, but they don't put the kid gloves on like we do.

Jon - I definitely wish us all well. Certainly it will be a very difficult task, however being optimistic, like me, can go a long way and when we surround ourselves with the right people, we can achieve the unimaginable. Only time will tell and I'm glad I'm here to witness it all.

Well Jon, Your post is well thought out and your fears are relevant. As an American, I respect the office of the President. I love your perspective because you chose to come to this country. That's very important to see our country from another perspective, Thank-you...

Kevin -  We really are. I was so surprised hearing to all those Hollywood stars calining that this was the greatest event for the country. If getting there qualifies it to be the greatest day in the country's history, the future sort of bothers me.

I am puzzled at people who get orgasm before having sex.

Paul - in theater there is a saying that entourage plays the king. Meaning that the king is usually doing nothing, and these are all his servants who create the fuss. Without them you would not know that this is a king.

There was too much fuss yesterday. I am OK with that, I am only afraid that this is like a locomotive, there is a lot of miles ahead and it needs a lot of work to do, and all energy goes to the whistle.

We have gone back to the days where we are not to fight the war on terror, but treat it like a law enforcement issue. God help us all.

Great post.

Jon,

I know he is no dummy! Look what he did to the Clinton machine? They are working for him now. Maybe if he really wants to go down in history as a great president he will do what is right for our country. He has lots of examples from FDR of what not to do so just maybe.

Nicholas -  it is really a strange point. It was not working well and people wanted change. For better or worse, just change. If Bush was right, he did not sell it.

The cehange has come, and now it is a question what and how. The guy comes with a clean slate at best, little of substance behind, smart, lucky, likable...

It is a carte blanche, the level of trust given in advance that maybe paid off nicely, or never paid at all. It may be the great presidency, wi h so many unhappy anyway, or the inauguaration day be the star moment, the highest point of the presidency.

Which groom is not in love with the bride at the wedding? Often that stays the highest point. We were at the wedding two days ago, and we have so much love. Either the marriage will strengthen or are we for a bitter divorce.

Mike - Of course, I want him to succeed, I want the country to succeed. We all do.

Watching the inauguration, and listening to those snippet-interviews with celebrities, I sometimes thought that on that day in this crowd Barak Obama maybe was the coolest person there. While there was celebration, he knew how tought the job is going to be, how difficult the issues are, and pass 100 days we do not have a clue what is going to happen.

I think the real problem is not with Obama, he already knows the real thing from the daily briefings, and he already got the taste of being on the edge an so dangerously close to a disaster, that we do not even know, it is the general public that was booing George Bush even when he was living. They are in a fairy world. The reality will be tough to accept for them.
