Things are not always what they seem to be. Sometimes 'bad luck' just means that the timing isn't right. I have often heard that back luck comes in 3s. As I understand this expression, it means that when bad luck visits you once, you can expect another two visits.

Bad Luck X 3

This seemed to have been the case yesterday morning, when I received three pieces of what at the time seemed like bad luck...all before 10:00 AM.

Just before 9:00 o'clock, I received an email from a new contact with whom I had a very long and productive telephone conversation the previous day.

Among the things we discussed was my working with him in a project that he was planning on starting early next month. The project was something that I am very interested in doing...but was thinking of pursuing in about 6-8 months.

So I welcomed the possibility of working on a similar project sooner than expected.

In the email, after thanking me for the conversation, my contact explained that having thought about the possibility of my assisting him in the project, it would not be possible...and outlined why this was the case.

Although disappointed, I acknowledged the e-mail and got on with my day.

Shortly after 9:00 o'clock, I received an email from a Real Estate Board contact, replying to an email I had sent him last week.

In addition to sending an email to this person, I had sent an email to the president of the board, although not in her capacity as president.

The President responded very favorably, referring my email on to a staff person.

Based on the President's response, I was hopeful that my request would be granted. Unfortunately as yesterday's email pointed out, Board policy prevented taking the action I had requested.

Once again disappointed, I acknowledged the e-mail and resumed normal activities.

The final of the set of 3 was learning that Google had dropped from its listings 10 of my web pages.

More disappointment but no email this time...I went out and shoveled snow to work off my frustrations.

Things Are Not Always What They Appear To Be

Doing something physical certainly does free up the thinking part of one's brain to address issues that appear to be problems.

On reflection, not participating in the new project is not really a big issue....in fact it is more of a non-issue.

Although I will not be involved in the project that starts next month, I can...and will...participate in a similar project later this year.

In his email, my contact even told me how to bring about this result.

Similarly, the Real Estate Board's denial of my request is also a non-issue.

Firstly, had my request been granted, the potential return on this marketing initiative would have represented considerably less than 1% of my projected sales revenue for the year.

And if I really do want to pursue this initiative, by paying $500 to the Board, I can do indirectly, what I cannot achieve directly.

And as for Google dropping pages...this is the second time it has happened.

The last time it happened, appropriate remedial steps resulted in the pages being re-listed...I have no doubt the same thing will occur this time round.

Not Bad Luck

Realistically, none of the 3 incidents can be classified as bad luck.

The first 2...not participating in a project and the denial of a request...were in fact failed expectations...expectations that were totally unrealistic.

From a sales perspective, each was a lead that failed to even become a 'warm lead'.

I think optimistic people, as I am, tend to develop unrealistic expectations...and experience the disappointment of failed expectations...unreasonable that they may be.

But that's OK...I'd would rather live with the consequences of being overly optimist than deal with the demoralizing fallout of pessimism.

And as a chronic optimist, I believe that in each case, the seemingly negative reply simply means 'no, not at this time'..in no way does it mean 'no, not ever'.

As for the dropped pages, it's not a personal thing between Google and me...it's just the result of Google's ongoing efforts to eliminate shady SEO techniques.

All things considered, yesterday was not such a bad day...even managed to move some snow...something I hadn't planned.

Goodness.  You appear to be caught in a maelstrom of fringe opportunities.  A fact I avoid with diligence.

However, as many would say, nothing ventured, nothing gained.  There is a future and experience may help in the future.

Hi Larry, Nice job keeping it all in perspective. This can always be worse!

Good morning:  My thought process is that "If it is meant to be it will happen".  I pray harder when things are going bad, especially when they come in threes.  Keep your optimism up and when things are meant to fall in place, they will.  Sometimes the worst of times turns into the best in the long run!

Hi Larry, I think it's important that when we are handed lemons, we must do our best to turn it into lemonade. Thanks for the post!

Perception is reality and we control our perception.  Though it is sometime hard to focus on the positive, it is always there and it worth the effort to re-focus as needed.

Hello Larry,  I just imagine that there were three positive things (at least 3) in your life yesterday as well.  I am a very optimistic person and I can almost turn a negative into a positive.  I know it's all in perspective.  For example, "damn snow needs shoveling" --- "I'm so glad I'm physically capable of shoveling snow".  I also enjoy physical activities to help clear my mind to make room for all the wonderful possibilities.  Good luck to you.

Larry -

Bad luck for you is good luck for me - I guess I am not alone in having to shovel snow in the morning!  It snows in Toronto? (Well, at least it comes in smaller amounts for you - "centimeters," not inches - yes?)

Luck is what you make it!  That potentially toxic client that gives a listing to someone willing to agree with him.  Bad luck?  Naaah - months later, when the listing doesn't sell, and the agreeable agent has spent considerable money and time trying to appease the seller - HE'S got the bad luck, not you.  You're good fortune came from the sound judgement not to succumb to temptation and compromise your standards.

You have trouble getting a complaint resolved with one of your Professional Partners?  This gives you the opportunity to go out and find a new, possibly better partner.

Even the weather - it's snowing, cold, icy?  Think of how much character you folks in Toronto, and we in Chicago, have versus those folks in the South who freak out when a half an inch of snow falls!

Good Luck - always!

Thanks so much for sharing!

Hi Larry -- it's always hard when things don't work out, I know it affects me for a few days, but one has to dust themselves off and keep right on going.  Reflection is important as it relates to learning how to avoid doing the same things <if relevant> and if that doesn't prove useful, simply moving forward and letting the chips fall where they may is my perspective.

These are the best of times if we know how to use them, if we prepared for all possible outcomes. Market slump means anyone filling out FAFSA's for their college kids may be in for a happy surprise.  There is always a silver lining and reaction to the events is the key.

What a great attitude!  When I am having a day like that I just say NEXT! and move on.  That is my motto because you never want to dwell too long when it looks like it is just one negative thing after another.  Especially these days!  LOL

1:21pm • #19

Sometimes I think "bad luck"  gets you to rethink things and refocus.  Never allow negativity to prevail, something positive can always come out of it!

1:36pm • #20

I think your attitude is great and remember for every bad thing that happens something positive always comes out of it.  Hang in there!!!

Great attitude and out look on what is going on.  It is certainly easy to get down when looking back at the year. But most of us still have it pretty good overall.

Your glass is always half full because you see it that way.  Love positive people like you!  Got lemons, make lemonade...looking for the good in the "not so good" pushes you ahead of the pack.  Keep on seeing that half full glass and leave that half empty glass to the rest of them :)

Larry, I am an eternal optimist as well.  When things don't work out as I planned, I just think it wasn't meant to be--at this time.  Something better is usually around the corner :)

Hi Larry, sales is just fishing, you just keep throwing the line in. I, too, am an eternal optimist. I'd rather be this way than any other. Nothing like burning those calories on a cold winter day!
