I'm not even going to pretend as if I understand SEO (Search Engine Optimization). My knowledge about this is shallow; but I can tell you that I know much more about SEO today than I did 2 weeks ago. I began working on my objectives for 2009 and one of them is to build an even greater web presence in the Frisco TX real estate market. I knew I didn't have time to work on it, and I needed to hire a company to help me get there much faster than I can myself. But before I could do that (select the right company), I need to understand some basic concepts so that I would be able to tell if a company complies to Google guidelines and truly know what they are doing.

I interviewed many companies these 2 weeks. Spoke to many more web design companies to help me achieve my online presence. Then I realized (in my research) how Active Rain became as powerful as it is. I'm coming to my senses that I cannot hire any company or anyone that could do this better than Active Rain to gain me the presence that I want in the time frame that I want.

Now, this is not a Hoo Haa blog about how great Active Rain is. They know they are great. They don't need anymore pats on their backs from me. But I think I want to unveil what I've found out about SEO and why every step of the way, Active Rain was this secret ingenious system. This is where it got me, I'm in awe!

Caution: You must read the following paragraphs slowly in order to digest the information. But I think it's important for you to understand this so that you could make a judgment call on whether to proceed an Active Rain presence for your business.

So, this point system is really a two-fold motive. One - which is the most obvious. The point system encourages many bloggers to continue to come back everyday to blog for more points. I really don't believe that points don't matter. It does, and especially to ALL of us here on Active Rain as small business owners. We are entrepreneurs and one of the qualities is to be competitive. Getting points and showing up Top Dog in your city is indeed self-serving.

Related links pointing to the Active Rain portalThe other underlining objective (that I'm guessing and maybe some of you brighter ones have figured it out) is that these points awarded for links on your real estate website is not really to award you points. It's Active Rain secret to grow to become the most powerful real estate content portal. When you have many genuine links pointing to AR and vice versa, Google gives these two sites higher rankings for content relevance. (As a bad example, if you have your favorite Bag store linked to your real estate website, the content are not related).

Active Rain as the Trusted Site
We - the Active Rain members participate by posting relevant real estate content. Consumers search and find your relevant blog content on the AR platform. Over time, the search results get cited more often, hence building a "trust" factor. So, the next time your future clients google for real estate information, Google will be sure to crawl the AR platform because it had build a trusted presence for reliable content.

If you understand the power of SEO and what it could do your business, your ultimate goal is to become an AUTHORITY in your area - just like Active Rain is an authority for real estate content. You become an authority of your keyword when you see links below your URL. See Realtor.com attachment. An authority shows up first in the search engine result. Try it for yourself. Google Real Estate or Active Rain and observe the difference between the top link with the rest of the links found on the search results.  Realtor.com as authority on real estate

Now, if you have time to study and work on your SEO - a multi-facet discipline which includes writing unique and compelling content, links, directory submissions, press releases to build an authority site, would you have time left to sell real estate?

During my quest of making an online presence for myself in my marketplace, I realize it will take me too much time, energy and money to out-do Active Rain. Heck, I helped build the Frisco TX segment. I'm a girl all about her looks, I didn't want to accept the Outside Blog because it couldn't do this or that. Read about my Looks post here.  So why re-invent the wheel when the obvious has been paying off for me over and over again?

Yes, this is a very long answer to Why you could/ should sign up for the paid version of Outside Blog - if you want a pure consumer-centric blog. Based on how I understand this, I could tell my post to go to my Outside Blog instead of my Active Rain platform if I so choose for unique content. Make sure you don't miss Bill Gassett's latest post about Raindexing in Active Rain Outside Blog Will Rock The House With Google Juice. The 2nd sentence should be enough for you to say, Where do I pay?

But if you are like me, you had to get a long answer, there you have it in my explanation up above.

Now, are you convinced? Have you signed up yet?

I will say that most clients find me via active rain then click on mywebsite then decide to call me. I think it's kind of a double edge that you have to have a good site and good content on AR

Loreena - Understanding SEO is a big giant to skin!  I think the outside blogs are really cool and I want one in a big way but right now survival is my biggest concern!!  Someday soon I hope to be back up there in income and I will say that since I have been on AR - my site searches have went up substantially!

Kevin - SEO is so interesting and I am amazed each time I study a little about it and realize all the mistakes I have done.

Gary - Yes, Google has truly trusted AR for some powerful content.

Tami - If I understand you correctly, I do believe that this Outside Blog can gain you the exposure you want, then hopefully it shows up in revenues too.

okay.. first things first... nice new picture.  I like this one better than the last.  You get to see your face more, plus it looks a little more professional.  Nothing wrong with the last picture, I just prefer this one more.

I hear you on the point system, but somehow I moved into 2nd in Frisco yet its harder for me to be found on Google.  This seems to have just happened over the past 2 - 3 weeks.  I am focused on posting more items about Frisco and perhaps that will help.. but for now, I have slid down on the first page. :-(  Hopefully that will improve again soon.

Nothing like showing your new outside blog off to make your point. I signed up two days ago and already had lots of commnets on it. I really like the three column look and the fact all my local cities are there. Now if the consumer visits they can see all of Washtenaw County and the individual areas.

It fits together perfectly.

Every single comment you make counts as a back link to your profile and then your blog and website(s).

Its very simple the more comments = the more links = higher page rank and more juice.

Just dont spam and its all cool.

Missy - I agree with you that I like the 3 column design. You are right that even WP cant do that!!! For now, I will have different areas of concentration for my Outside Blogs since it's too powerful of a tool not to be used and my WP blog for another. My husband is helping me with a test site. He figured out iframe in less than 5 minutes. And it took me 30 minutes just to understand the 1st paragraph 2 nights ago. Talk about bright....

I'm hoping you're right about extra links under the number one result means that the site is considered an authority.  But it might be a combination of other things.   Usually your url needs to have at least part of the keyword phase in it.  My website has those extra links when you search for "Atlanta homes" but it doesn't when you search for "Atlanta real estate agent" even though both are number one results.

Loreena:  Very well written.  I too have gone through these same types of realizations where I want to be in complete control of something or do it myself.  But as I often find, it is best to leverage what somebody else has already done, I think this is how you get ahead much quicker.

AR has already done all of the heavy lifting.  All you need to do is contribute the content. :)

Hi Loreena -- You make a very compelling argument and I agree with you.  Question for you:  I went to servingfrisco.com and nothing came up?  Is this your new outside AR blog?  I don't understand how the relationship exists between my current/free AR blog and a new outside one, where points are made or not, if the content is duplicated or not, and I also copy my ar blog entries to the blog on my own company website (it's my company), so I'm confused on the duplicate content as well.  If anyone on AR can answer this, it would be appreciated.

Chris - You got my attention when you mentioned nothing came up at ServingFrisco. I just went there and it's up and running. I will try to answer your answer - knowing full well that I'm not an IT expert.

Is this your new outside AR blog? ==> Yes

I don't understand how the relationship exists between my current/free AR blog and a new outside one ==> Just imagine 2 different platforms. This free is what you are looking at now. But when you go to ServingFrisco, you will see my paid Outside Blog. Not to be confused with the unPaid (free) version of Outside Blog. If you go to this page, you can see my Old Outside blog.

Where points are made or not ==> If you are talking about points, it's several different ways of achieving points and this has nothing to do with your Outside Blog.

If the content is duplicated or not, and I also copy my ar blog entries to the blog on my own company website (it's my company), so I'm confused on the duplicate content as well ==> I'm trying to understand this myself. Google likes unique content. So for my 3 blogs: on AR, Outside Blog and Wordpress, I plan to write 3 variations of the same consumer blog. I also plan to let the first version get indexed first, then add the 2 to it later. Duplicate content is not a bad thing. It may get filtered out. But so far, my Old Outside Blog and my AR blog gets me business - which is the most important thing.

Team Carroll - Unique as in one and only version. It took me a while to realize and sink in.

Brien - The $20/mth is really very cheap. I dont have any SEO company work on my stuff and my business comes from blogs I write on AR. I'm sure your guy doesnt charge you $20/mth. I have been quoted $2000/mth for a full-service package and I have to write them myself and they help with optimizing the articles.

Mike Frazier - I try the best I can. Thanks for the compliments.
