Imagine that you're asleep in your hotel room on the 14th floor and suddenly you hear hear this bleating sound that awakens you. Then you notice the flashing white light as well and determine that it's the fire alarm going off. False alarm? No way to tell.

So you get up, carefully open the door and see people up and down the hallway doing the same thing and then leaving their rooms. What to take? Well, it's probably a false alarm anyway so I'll chance it and leave my computer. Just grab the cell phone and go. Oops, forgot to put on a jacket.

So we walk down 14 flights of stairs to the the side street and are met by security people from the hotel who are just as puzzled as we are. Afer 10 minutes or so, we're allowed to return. Turns out they suspect some kid of pulling the alarm, and I guess it just affected our floor. No one seemed to be involved.

So as I write this, I'm pretty sure it happened. I mean, it wasn't just a dream, was it?

Steve, I had this happen once, but in a small residence inn hotel in a small town in Lehigh Valley PA... the entire county worth of fire equipment showed up... Took forever to get back inside and all because some one sprayed one of the fire extinguishers in a hallway.  No fire, just a vandal....

I have a friend that worked in a war zone for awhile.  He talked about children who would continue playing in the streets while missiles were being lopped their way.  It is amazing what things we can become desensitized to.

Steve - it's always better safe than sorry - and don't forget to feel the door for heat first - before opening it!! :)

Steve:  Nothing like a fire alarm to make you jump into action.  We had a false alarm here at the house when it was still new.  I called 911.  I didn't see smoke or fire, but that didn't mean it wasn't somewhere where I couldn't.  911 never showed, but by then, I realized it was just a false alarm.

Steve,

Hotel where I am, every night some odd bird perches outside the window after dark and cheeps a few times. He does that for an hour and vanishes. No clue what it looks like.

Steve.. Wouldn't it have to be a dream?  Since when do fire alarms only activate one floor.  I know, I'm thinking logically.. but I'm awake.  My question.. could you get back to sleep?

You are so right - not a good way to wake up. Don't recommend it. :)

Myrl,

I guess we become desensitizied to alarms because they malfunction or are abused so often. :)

April,

You're right, and I just opened the door without testing it - then remembered that wasn't such a good thing to do - although I didn't ever believe it was a valid alarm. :)

Chris Ann,

It will get you going for sure. How did your fire department know they shouldn't come? :)

Valerie,

I found out that it did alert other floors, too, and that some people exited to other areas. I guess the others just ignored the noise and went back to sleep. :)
