Headed to Fort Meade?  If so, you may be surprised to learn there are many neighborhoods within 30 minutes - in five, yes FIVE, counties.  That means five entirely separate school systems, not to mention dozens of schools, that your children may attend when you relocate to the area.

Let me assure you that each of these school systems has something to offer.  But making a school choice should probably be based on the individual school, perhaps even individual classes, near any homes you consider.  And, of course, if your child has a special need of any kind, it's a good idea to contact the school system(s) in advance of your home search to inquire about schools that will best address that need, and focus your home search in any area served by the most appropriate school(s).Meade Middle School - copyright mwoda

There's a very easy way to figure out which public school your child is likely to attend.  All you have to do is visit the school system's websites and find the "School Locator" - or, even easier yet, just click on the links below and enter the address for any property:

Annapolis Area Christian SchoolIt wasn't hard to find these links, but I did have trouble opening some of them and/or getting them to function.  Anne Arundel County's School Locator was the easiest to find and quickest to identify schools.  Since Fort Meade is located in Anne Arundel County, that's probably the most important one for you to access.

Of course, not every family chooses public school education.  The following links will help you explore other options:

Thank you for your service to our country!  I look forward to having an opportunity to serve you and your family.

As a Navy wife, I experienced several PCS moves myself - not to mention finding, buying and moving my family into a new home while my husband was deployed. I "get" military pay and how the various allowances impact your qualifying to buy a home.  And I know how to help military families move into their own home without any cash "up front" - something you cannot do as a renter.

I serve military families throughout the, D.C. - Baltimore - Annapolis area, specializing in Anne Arundel, Howard and Prince George's Counties, Maryland. You can contact me online or by cell/text at 301-346-2923 to help your family relocate to Fort Meade, Andrews AFB, the U.S. Naval Academy, or any other military installation in D.C. or Maryland.

Hi Margaret, Good idea including the non-public schools as well. Not everyone fits into the same mold.

Having a good Realtor in your corner who knows the local school districts well is important. I know there is nobody that knows the area like you do Margaret. This kind of information is terrific.

Thanks, Folks, I've worked very hard to reach out through ActiveRain to anyone relocating to Fort Meade, Northrop Grumman, Andrews AFB and other installations and companies that have an influx of personnel to the area.

Margaret:  Great post for buyers! I'm helping folks that currently live in Fairfax County, but they have a TON of questions about schools.  I keep referring them to the Fairfax County school site, but they seem to want me to say which district is best.  I have no children, I have no clue what folks look for in schools.  Seems to me that middle and high schools are the ones people would want to be picky about.  But their kids are under 5 and they are planning on being in their next home for 15 years or more.  Who knows?  Nothing will be the same in 15 years, especially school districts....not as fast as Northern Virginia changes.
