It is not made just for taking pictures of bridges but it is a type of camera that bridges the gap between a Point and Shoot and the DSLR cameras.  Kodak recently announced one themselves, the KODAK z980 . Olympus has announced the SP-590UZ ultra-zoom digital camera. Trumping Kodak's 24X zoom, the SP-590UZ features a 26X zoom lens that covers a 26-676mm equivalent focal length range. Thankfully there's image stabilization to help prevent camera shake at the long end of the zoom. Like previous recent Olympus UZ cameras, the SP-590UZ can record RAW files.

Although 26 mm isn't ideal for real estate it beats the 35mm of most of the cameras used for taking pictures for real estate.  It will be good for taking taking bird pictures in my backyard in Glenwood.

Here are some of the features.  No reviews yet.

  • Most powerful optical performance in minimum size: 26x wide optical zoom (26-676mm*) - from extreme close-ups to the action as well as landscapes, 130x incl. digital zoom
  • Avoids camera shake and blurry images thanks to Dual Image Stabilisation (combines mechanical and digital image stabilisation)
  • Don't miss the moment with high-speed 10fps sequence shooting**
  • P/A/S/M exposure modes for creative freedom
  • High-Definition Multimedia Interface (HDMITM) technology incorporated for viewing images in high definition on HDMI TVs
  • 12 Megapixels to make prints up to poster-size
  • Advanced Face Detection of up to 16 persons for perfectly focused and exposed faces. In combination with Shadow Adjustment Technology other main parts of the picture are also correctly exposed.
  • 6.9cm/2.7" HyperCrystal II LCD with a bright display even in brilliant sunlight and at extreme angles (230,000 dots)
  • Built-in flash and wireless flash control directly from the camera body
  • Liven up your memories with movie recording with sound (up to VGA resolution at 30fps)
  • xD-Picture Card and microSD Card*** compatible

It looks like Olympus is just pushing lens technology a little further.  I blogged about the SP-565UZ and SP-570UZ back in August and now they have extend the zoom range from 20X to 26X.  I remember when 28mm for a point & shoot was wide and these new cameras not only are 26mm on the wide end, but they almost reach 700mm on the telephoto end.  COOL!

I am sure you will love your new camera Gene, as Olympus makes a fine camera...I also have the Olympus SP500UZ that has many of the features you have described, however only 6 mega pixels which is fine for the web, but as you said if you want high quality poster size photography you need the 12 mega pixel.

Should be great for real estate photography! Some people prefer the heft of a bridge and find it easier to use.
