Oh Woe is Me! How Can I Stay Up in a Down Market?

By
Real Estate Sales Representative with Capstone Washington Real Estate, LLC

At a recent company meeting everyone was asked to write down what works for them to keep their spirits up when everything around us seems to be crashing down. These were some of the results:

  • Have faith. Believe in something bigger than yourself and believe that what is meant to be, will be.
  • Suit up and show up! This is a JOB and you have to go to it every day - even when you'd rather not!
  • Come to Keller Williams! Our energy is high and family culture is strong.
  • Build relationships - with other agents, vendors, and affiliates. We're all in this together!
  • Be informed and educated. Don't focus on scary headlines, learn the true stories behind them.
  • Realize it's okay to worry sometimes. But then get back to work!
  • Read the new "SHIFT" book by Gary Keller.
  • Stay focused and put your tools into action. "Vision without implementation is hallucination."
  • Get by giving. Ask yourself who you can help today - then do it with love!
  • Set realistic goals and celbrate every success.
  • Have confidence in yourself. If you don't feel it right now, fake it 'til you make it!
  • Go on property tour. Start one if your office doesn't have one. You'll learn your market, learn from other agents, and have FUN!
  • Laugh every day; read jokes online, watch a funny video or TV show, do silly dances with your kids, just do someting that makes you laugh and takes your mind off things for a little while.
  • Be proactive, not reactive. Don't sit back and let the market "happen" to you!

Hope you find something here that works for you! I'd love to hear what's working for others, too. What are you doing to keep your spirits up?

I find you tend to get what you focus on. Focus on all the bad things happening, watch the bad TV news, read the newspaper full of negatives, watch the cop shows and you get the negative energy flowing, big time! You start getting depressed and discouraged and that will color your whole day. Sure, you have to keep up with current events, but not to the point that it drags you down.

I now start each morning thinking about a person or two in my circle of family, friends, co-workers, and aquaintances that I feel needs a lift, a small word of kindness or encouragemant, or needs to feel appreciated. Then I send them a card. It only takes me a minute or two, and it is a wonderful way to start my day on a positive note.

The shift of focus from the trials and tribulations of my own life to doing these random acts of kindness in reaching out to others in a positive way is amazing! I've been doing it for months now.

Tonight I got the most incredible, long hug from a young man I know who has been fighting a drug problem. He said all my cards made a huge difference in encouraging him to find a better path for his life. I sent out to give, but I got far more back from that one hug than you could ever know.

A friend I had lost touch with called me in tears telling me my uplifting card to her came at the perfect time, since she was so very lonely and thought no one cared anymore.

Today I sent a get well card, two congratulations cards for new business locations for Chamber members, a birthday card, a thanks for dinner card, and  a motivational card for my out of state brother.

Nice for them to receive in the mail? Yes, but even better for me to be able to send out positives and not focus on negatives.

If you know someone in your life who needs a card today, please go to my website at http://sendoutcards.com/32451 and send one free on me (stamp included). Make it a heartfelt card and send it out only to give someone a lift. It'll make you feel good.

Who's waiting to hear from you?

Thank you so much for a very positive post , in today's world we are constantly being pulled in the negative zone, if you listen to those negative things it affects your subconscious and you start focusing on negatives and loose the site of being hopeful because negative things grow like a snowball and everything starts to look bad, so everyone needs to stay positive even though it is harder than it sounds. somewhere I had read a simple thing

If u cry at trouble,  It grows double,

If u laugh at a trouble,  It disappears like a bubble.

Let us all make  more bubbles.

Jamie, thanks for the post and the strategies.  I kind of look at it a bit differently.  Just because it's a down market, doesn't mean it's a down business environment for us.  People need to sell and others need to buy.  This is a difficult market for them and they need us more than ever.  I think the opportunities are great!

WOW! What great responses everyone - thank you so much! With the help of everyone here, the list of spirit-lifters has doubled, maybe even tripled! I love that most of the ideas aren't just "real estate" things. They are things we can apply in our lives regardless of what is troubling us.

What I'd like to do is go back through all the comments and compile another easy-to-read list of ideas and post them next week. I promise to give credit where credit is due. On behalf of everyone who was helped by your ideas - Thank You!

Jamie:

Thanks for being my morning inspiration. I just home from the President's Inauguration where I became inspired and decided to get out of the box of fear I've been living in.  It's time to get back to basics, and get back to business.  Buyers and sellers need us especially now. In fact, I believe this country needs us who love this business to help get this economy back in the right direction!

Thanks for the great pick-me-up post. "The Millionaire Real Estate Agent" ( I think that's the name but I might have it wrong) is a good one to live by too.

I am so glad that I opened my AR email this afternoon. Thanks Jamie for all the positive feedback and thanks for the great flow that your post created from other members. I am going to share them all at my office meeting on Thursday because it is so important to focus on this type of thinking rather than what the news is saying. I especially liked all the lines from the members that were short and sweet like the one from Patty Luther that says, "have a great 2009, it will all be fine" I'm keeping that one in my head and whenever I hear some negative real estate headline I am just going to repeat have a great 2009, it will all be fine!
