Whats happening around Shady Hollow, a monitored/controled vegetation burn.

As a resident of Shady Hollow I try to keep up with whats happening in my neighborhood. Recently I got a letter telling those of us in Shady Hollow and the families just south of us in Southland Oaks about an upcoming prescribed burn in our area. The Water Quality Protection Lands Program is going to set some fires along MOPAC and Upper Bear Creek. The burn will be managed by the US Fish and Wildlife Service, The Nature Conservancy and Austin's Water Utility's Wildlife Division. The fire is to help restore this land to grasslands and savannas. These are the most effective type of land for protecting the water quality and quantity that feeds into Barton Springs portion of the Edwards Aquifer.

The exact date is not set due to weather conditions. In order to do the burn as safely as possible the weather conditions must be favorable. They can't start the burn if its too windy as sparks might get out of the containment area. There will be a notice on the nightly news at least 24 hours before the fire is set. The prescribed burn should be complete in 24-48 hours. The smoke impact is supossed to be minimal, but you may wish to remain indoors on the day the burn occurs. If you live in the neighborhood and have health problems that may be agrivated by smoke, please stay inside or go stay with a friend during the duration of the burn.

If you have additional questions about the prescribed burn you should go to the website: wwwcityofaustin.org/water/wildland.

The exact burn location is MOPAC and Upper Bear Creek, about 1.25 miles southwest of Slaughter & Brodie Lane. Please see attached map for detail.

Betina, those controlled burns while necessary always worry me with wind and getting out of control. Hope yours goes well with no problems, or you'll have something ELSE to write about.

Dear Gary,

I hope it does not go wrong because it is very close to MY house and the Ladybird Johnson Wildflower Center.

Hi Betina~ good for you to get the word out!!! These controlled burns will become more common as folks start planting native grasses over "lawns." This is a part of native grass plantings that many people don't realized must occur. Just like a forest fire that regenerates forests the planned burnings become necessary. Disasters can always happen but cooperation and awareness offer a safety net keeping a "controlled" burn from becoming a raging, unplanned fire!

In Michigan these can be seen often in the summer through the ditches!

Dear Mary,

I am good with the burn as long as its under control. What most people don't know is we are in a 6 year drought and have not seen a drop of rain for five months. 2008 was the driest year since 1957 in Austin area!! So thats what has me worried. I just try to keep my friends and neighbors informed. I hope things are going well in MI!

:)
