When the time came for us to rethink and revamp the home page for the Ticor Title & Escrow Northwest website, we brushed up on our minimalist aesthetic sensibilities and went straight to Google analyitics. Why? We've been tracking the pageviews on our site for many moons now via Google analytics and there are more little nuggets of info in there about our users' preferences and behavior than you can shake a stick at. This made it really easy to determine what to keep on the home page and what to toss out.

Ticor Title and Escrow has a fresh new home page

What did we specifically look at? Well Google has a nice overlay feature that shows you your site with an overlay of where people click (and how many times they click). In our case, we noticed that people clicked on our link to the Ticor Dashboard quite a bit. On the contrary, the overlay also showed us that there were several icons taking up space on the left that weren't getting the clicks that we had originally thoght they might. So, they're gone now. No need to waste space with them. And no need to bother our users with them if they don't click them anyways.

Another simple yet great analytics metric we looked at when revising our page was the top content section (the pages that specifically get viewed the most). We took those top pages and put direct links to them in the upper left hand corner of the page. When you think about it, there's no sense in making it hard for our clients to get to where they're going or distracting them in the process. They're on our site for a purpose and we just made it easier for them. Let's face it. We're a title and escrow company. Our clients are not on our site to kill time. They need to place orders, request customer service, find research tools and marketing solutions, and move on. Is the new look a winner? Time (and google analytics) will tell!

Enjoy!

This is great information to have.  I have Google Analytics but don't take full advantage of it....I will now, thank you!

Excellent article, I think all agents should track visits to their websites, I found Google analytics to quiet useful.

I am an agent in Newport Rhode Island, people know us as the Ocean State.

I am working on improving my website base on the information I get from Google.

I didn't realize that Google offered the overlay -- that is fantastic news.  I'm on my way there now to check it out!

Congrats on your new website -- it looks really nice.

It is very important to know the effectiveness of your site and google has made that possible. Whether you realize it or not, people judge your site like they would judge any other storefront.

Great information Matt. We can use every little bit of those teq tips we can get. (I do anyway) Thanks for the post.

Good use of google analyitics! Yes, that overlay is rather revealing. I have modified my pages a few times to as a result. But you also want to pay attention to page location. Some areas may get clicked a bit more partly because of where they are located.

Hi Mat,

Good stuff, thanks for the info. I've been watching mine for a while and I know it's only so-so, not enough sticking power IMHO. I'll click on over to view yours.

Thanks coach!

Google analytics rocks !  We get emailed reports to us every week for our two sites, www.thesomersteam.com and www.phillyinvestorhub.com .  Also, according to AR we should be able to put our blogs on soon too.  We love to monitor the traffic and really like to see where the people are coming from as that helps us with our marketing.

Maatt, My website is relatively new so I haven't changed much of it yet, but I signed up for google analytics a couple of months ago and I can easily see the value in it.  It is very interesting isn't it to see what the consumer is clicking on? Some I expect and some surprises me!

I think the thing with analytics is the few who even bother to check only check the number of visitors and have no idea on any of the other features.

Matt,

Good points! I think I sometimes forget "less is more" and need to remove some unnecessary STUFF from my Webpage.

Thanks for the reminder!

Matt, we love google analytics, the info is definitely valuable. There are a few other programs that can track all kinds of things such as heatmaps of what users clicked on etc. but no matter which way you analyze things, knowing what people look at helps a lot. ~Rita

Thanks everyone for the feedback and encouragement.  I have to say that I owe a debt of gratitude to Rene Fabre for being such a great leader, thinker, and tech mentor.  He's the spirit behind the clean minimalist ethic on our site.  Three cheers for the black dot on the white canvas!!!

Great work, explaining how 'Goog Analytics' can help improve a website. I love that you've used this to make our Ticor site work better, all based on what our clients tell us.  Thanks Matt!

Hi, thanks for the post. Speaking of analytics, wanted to let you know that your above link "Ticor Dashboard" serves up a certificate error when you click on it... (bad link for seo.)

Matt - be careful with your AR Blog here, featured posts, great content, lots of traffic, you'll likely pass up your corporate site on Google, be prepared for this to happen, it happened to me when I "USED" to be at First American Title.  I'm just sayin...  Have a glass of Google juice on us this morning.   :-)
