Iguana eating lunch in Costa Rica

Iguanas want lunch too We stopped for lunch yesterday at Playa Ocotal in the Guanacast region of Costa Rica, and the iguanas wanted to join us.

The hugest bluebird I've ever seen landed on George's plate and started eating French fries.

Then our host said that the iguanas liked them, too. So I threw one over, and yes, it's true - the iguana liked it. Several French fries later, the iguana was still eating. I stopped, and then the iguana ran off, chasing a smaller iguana up the tree.

What a wonderful beachfront lunch on Playa Ocotal - the wonderful day was shared by the wildlife and the humanife.

Sharon - hope you are having a wonderful trip. Have heard great things about Costa Rica. The wildlife in some of the more tropical places can be pretty interesting. We had a monkey in a tree by our table when we were in Brazil, and the sugar birds in St. Martin would come right up to the table. Woo will there be a vaction photo post?

Hi Sharon, I got to thinking about the french fries for the iguanas and it sort of reminds of offering candy to little kids. I am sure they like it,lol. When I was in Costa Rica, we had some pretty long ( no pun intended) discussions about the iguanas and that they eat them there. They are referred to for the tourists as "tree chickens". Since they are on the menu of many of the local places to eat and when one asks what it is they respond by saying they are 'tree chcickens'. Every time I see a picture of one, I think about that.

CocoPlum - yes to both.

Jeff - Costa Rica seems to have something for everyone - and drive a few hours and you can have a totally different environment.

Norma - the differences are what is so enriching about travel. Too bad you couldn't have taken photos in the tombs in the Valley of the Kings - they were really beautiful.

Mike - is that normal fare in the desert?

Lisa - these weren't as big as the ones I've seen in St Thomas so I wasn't as frightened of them.

Shirley - somebody has to do it. I wouldn't want to not do due diligence for my clients.

Kat - call me anytime from Tuesday on.

William - while I wouldn't want to give up St Pete, I could live here for part of the year.

Bill - a friend that I sent the picture to said she fed them broccoli because she was concerned about their cardiovascular health. I figure the French fries are better for them than for me.

William - I'll have to be on the lookout for that. Even the local haunts I visited didn't have them on the menu (though who knows what's in some of the mixed stews).

Sharon, I have a new iguana friend, Rex. He's about 4 feet long and just loves to devour our hibiscus flowers. Apparently they're an iquana delicacy. Who knew?
