Today, I want to spotlight a historical event. Some historical events affect the future in ways we regret or celebrate forever. Some are just footnotes in the chain of human existence.
January 24th, 1848 was the day gold was found in California, leading to the great gold rush there. James Marshall was a carpenter working on the saw mill of his partner Johann Sutter near Coloma, California, when they found it. Unfortunately for the pair, others were also present, and the word soon got out. The non-Indian population of California grew from 20,000 in 1848 to 100,000 in 1849 and twice that amount again by 1852.
