New York Feng Shui--What IS Mt. Misery on Long Island? (LOCALISM FEATURED)

A New York Feng Shui Consultant Explores “Hauntings

Whenever people think of “A Haunting” in relation to Long Island—just 45 minutes from New York City they automatically think of The Amityville Horror House. Made famous by a book and movie of the same name, it claimed that a house located in Amityville Long Island was haunted due to the terrible incident in the home.

An entire family murdered—it later revealed that one of the sons, Ronald DeFao had killed his entire family while they were sleeping. Although most New York Feng Shui Consultants believe very much in Predecessor Energy, I believe this later turned out to be a hoax.

There IS one place on Long Island New York that I have visited once before and tend to stay away from. It was the earliest stories of Hauntings I’d ever heard as a child. I went once at night and found the place SO eerie, I had never traveled the road again. Until recently.

I am speaking of Mt. Misery Road located in Huntington New York. Mt. Misery did NOT get it’s NAME from the Haunting, it was actually called that from earlier settlers who found the roads too difficult to travel on. Some people say there are UFO’s there. Many have seen ghosts wandering around in the darkness. The road at night is completely dark and very narrow---actually there is nothing to indicate the END of the road except a piece of wood---pretty easy to miss.

There are also reported to be “Men in Black” there. Residents report seeing these men quite often, and they are always spotless….even in the rain they are reported to be dry. History says there was a hospital on the grounds at one time. Some say it was a psychiatric hospital that burned down, reportedly taking the residents with it. In the end, Mt. Misery is best known for “MARY’S GRAVE.” The ghost of Mary who is buried nearby and died a tragic death on the road, she now refuses to leave. She is said to be a being who is earthbound. Say what you will, Long Island has it’s share of Haunted Areas. It’s interesting that many of my photos from that day DID not come out…..hmmmm.

Don't you love a good ghost story?  We have a historic district in Concord NC that is filled with interesting tales and hauntings.  I love to share them with clients that are new to the area.

Dear Carole,

This seems like such a dreary spooky place. How on earth were you able to stay log enough to take all these pictures?!? I am glad you made it out in one piece!

Carole,

That road looks spooky even in daylight, so how deep-reaching will it be at night. Besides, someone, a ghost or Mary or something, tampered with your camera without you even knowing it. Run!

Late getting back here, sorry!  My goodness someone must like scary stories :)

Joan,Thanks for the kind comment.  One of our many places of Hauntings here on the Island.

Rich, I will go to check out the post, thank you for mentioning it.  The shoes--they don't look exactly like shoes to me.

Rene, Feng Shui believes in Predecessor Energy so we believe they can be real.  I've been in many homes that clients believe are haunted and sometimes hear and see things as well....

Neal, I didn't know you grew up here.  That area of Amityville is really beautiful, right on the water.  I have always wondered if it was a hoax.

Michelle, Believe me, I'm not laughing....neither are many of my clients.  We've seen them and experienced them first hand.

Linda, The whole story goes back a LONG way....from the days the hospital grounds were there and UFO sightings were popular.  I was very young when I first heard about it....

Laurie, I would LOVE an autographed copy!  It WAS pollitical or did the son do it?  I believe he did but the "hauntings" were not real....they thought they would make money off it and they did!

Kat, Incredibly awful thought, isn't it?  That's supposedly what happened though from what we later learned the Lutz family bought the house thinking they could make a bundle---and did.  Laurie though apparently knows the entire story!

Mara, I'm sorry!  It's a creepy place day OR night but I have to say it was interesting going back after so long.

Kelsey, I thought about leaving the car and walking around.  To be honest I was happy to get back in after the pictures--it doesn't FEEL good there!

Jo, I do that quite often actually.  Space Clearings are for negative or "stuck" energy and sometimes (yes) spirit energy.  They work very well although one place I went back three times before the activity the family was experiencing stopped.

Elizabeth, I didn't like seeing that either.  Probably is high school kids but it was a creepy site.

Bob & Carolin, Thank you, it was frightening.  I wish all the pictures came out.

Roland, You and I both. Although some places on Long Island it loses the signal and I get lost anyway!

Jay, I would go to that and probably enjoy it.  They always call the Winchester House the most haunted home in the world and I thought that might be interesting in a weird way.

Shuki, She should just Google Haunted Long Island, there are more places then I would have thought....and a restaurant in the city that's pretty famous down by the pier.

Bob &  Richelle, I didn't know that....but you can believe if I'm out in Sag Harbour I'll look for it!  Thank you for letting me know.

Deb, It makes me wonder too.  Maybe it's from all the stories but the place was creepy as a teen and still is today in the daylight.  There ARE homes off the side roads near there.....some of the residents report strange things and others don't from what I've heard and read.

Sharon, I wonder too why so many didn't come out.....it wasn't raining or anything unusual.

James, I think I am more afraid of spiders and mice then ghosts :(

Rebecca, We have some BEAUTIFUL places here too!  Places you would like!

Susan, I actually would not want to go to Gettysburgh which I have heard from SO many people is frightening.  I do know on Long Island there were many fights...Indians, then the Dutch took it over--and on and on.  There were actually many battles here as well.  I love my job!

Debbie, That movie actually really scared me!  I'm not easily scared but something about that movie got to me!

Allen, I like to share stories as well.  I didn't know you had an area of Concord that was "haunted" and would love if you'd share some stories on AR one day!

Betina, When I got out of the area I wondered :)  And felt SO much better!!

Rebecca, I would be curious to know what your father knows about it--although I'm sure he's familiar with it I wonder if he's been on it.

Esko, Thankfully I didn't see Mary but I wouldn't go into the forest---OR near the gravesites which are right there---I'd seen enough.

Craig, I KNEW those shoes must have belonged to someone on AR!!  I don't know how in the world you hung out there--one ride at night as a teen did it for me!  BTW, could you please stop painting the area with spooky things? --lol

Sounds like Mt. Misery lives up to its name.  Did the name come after all of the hauntings or before.  Congratulations on the Featured post.

Donna, Before if you can believe it.  It was originally named Mr. Misery because the early settlers couldn't pass there :)

Lizette, The teens go there---and Ghost Hunters.  It's not a road I'd be on at night after that one time.

What a fascinating thread this has become ! Did you ever imagine you would have created such a buzz with so many people touched by your creepy story !!!! (I mean that with complete respect of course :o)

I love it ! - I'm so intrigued, I may take a drive across the bridge some time at dusk just to experience the 'chill' first hand !!!

Sheldon, You really make me laugh :)  I had no idea people liked really creepy stuff--maybe just a break from Real Estate for a time.  Do NOT go there at night....you will not enjoy it, trust me!  And you'll get lost (and have very little room to turn around :)  It's NOT at ALL fun at night--OR during the  day!

I received a call a year ago from a buyer four states away from me (I'm in Ohio) inquiring about the Amityville home, and she was convinced I had it for sale, which obviously, I did not.  When I told her I had no idea about this home, she wasn't convinced.

It's weird how common sense and logic can go out the window.  I personally haven't met a ghost <can't say I'm looking forward to meeting one> so I can't comment on this, but the old saying: life is stranger than fiction is relevant I think.

I must admit, everyone once in a blue moon, when I am showing homes, I will enter one home that just totally creeps me out and gives me the willies, very bad vibes.  Not sure why.  Who knows...

Sheldon, Trust me, you do NOT want to go there :)  Then again, Amityville is not far.....hmmmm

Kathy, We well went at night as teens...and then I stayed away.  Geez, that was EONS ago. We have lots of "haunted" places here.

Chris, I am more then familiar with the Amityville Horrow House...where a couple has been living peacefully for years.  I do believe the Lutz family bought that house just to make this a scam. Still, it was a horrible tradgedy and I personally wouldn't want it.  I get calls for Space Clearings from many clients and have experienced some scary things........probably why you get "creeped out" in some homes.  I don't doubt it anymore.

Carol, I'm an AR newbie, and I just happened on your post about Mt. Misery. You just brought back memories I didn't know I still had!

I grew up in Plainview, LI (I won't say when!), and visiting Mt. Misery at night was absolutely a right of passage for teens! A group of kids would decide to go, and then dare a lot of other kids to come along. Scary, but we all came back!
