Just when I thought there was not going to be any ice, and I would miss yet another year....  It all started Sunday Morning when Dave rang my door bell.  He was headed to check the conditions, lost my cell number and was going to give me a call. It has been too warm the past few days, and 2 nights in a row that did not dip below freezing... but Saturday Night into Sunday we had temps around 10...

Honesty, I was still in bed when he stopped by.. After all it was Sunday!  A little while later my cell rings... He had walked the ice, chopped a few holes and it was thick enough to sail... (average of about 4 inches thick)... He reported there were about 8 DN's getting ready to go.

Now I had gather all the gear that I have not used in a few years and rush to get in a few runs

Here's my boat, together and ready to go, not the best shot of my boat, but you can see the fleet in the back ground getting ready for a race

my DN

That's me walking out to my boat for another run... in the fore ground you can see my friend Pete's boat, broken from a collision Tiller broken in half and the steering gone as well

Below, ready to go... sheet in, Tiller in hand and run a few steps

jump in to the boat, Trim in Hard.. and feel the boat accelerate..

We had about 20 DN's out there today, Always better to have people around since there are some risks, in case you find a soft spot and go swimming, you want help QUICKLY!

A shot of the Fleet

and lastly, Me coasting in as the wind died..

Unfortunately I don't have any great speed shots, this little boat will do over 60 MPH in the right conditions, I think I topped out at around 40 today, enough to keep the adrenaline pumping and keep you warm!

Lets hope the ice stays around for a few more weekends!

If you are in Toms River and want to see some of the action, Drive to the End of Fischer Blvd... I bet most mornings this coming week you will see a few boats out sailing, I may try to sneak in a day this week myself!

Have a great week!

Quickly tossed together, but I wanted to share some of the fun of the area I live in... That same water gets in the 80's in the summer, we truly have all 4 seasons here!

Just one of the ways I like to have fun

Burr!!!  I'm cold just looking at the pictures.  I'll take a sunny day in Charleston any day over the ice in NJ.

Thomas, I wasnt cold yesteday at all, other than my fingers when I was putting the boat together. It was high 20's and sunny yesterday. And The very same spot has 80+ degree water in the summer, I look at that as being the best of both worlds!

Lisa: NO TO SNOW... it ruins the ice!!!  I actually have a Boy Scout Camp trip this weekend, so I hope I can sneak out of work one day and get another sail in.  A DN is a class of boat.  See the "DN" on the sail?  It is all about measurments. Starting with the sail, (I think it is 70 square feet) along with length, width etc...  DN stands for Detroit News, I think the design came from a contest they had eons ago.  Its my 60mph coffee table.... all pretty varnished mahagony

Robert:  I get both cold and excited just looking at your pictures.  60 mph - that's freeway speed.   That's amazing!  I can just imagine the adrenaline rush.  Wow!  I'm dizzy with excitement as I write these words.

One question though:  why do they call it "Sailing"?  That's more like high speed sledding!

Although it looks like tons of fun, Southern Women just aren't made to do much at all on ice!

Mirela, Thank You for the Feature!  The speed is hard to describe... even the perception of speed since you are so close to the ice... It is also quiet.. you only hear the chattering of the blades on the ice.  And it is sailing... with out a sail it wouldn't move!
