Well...  FLAT MATT arrived in Connecticut this afternoon.  He did set off the wonder radar within my office.  Instead of placing the envelope in my mail box our administrator was holding it and hand delivered it to my wife because it came for DAN and the woman made personal comments. You would expect a letter to me from ANN CUMMINGS would not draw any suspicion.

Matt had packed  light so our first stop was to get him some running shoes for his adventure. Being a connoisseur of running apparel we found a pair of shoes that matched the orange color of his name. Usually I run in shorts but today I picked out those skin tight pants so we match.

Next on the agenda was a five mile run to loosen up his traveling legs and work up an appetite for dinner.  At the Train Tracks we hit mile marker four, 12 minutes to go and we will be finished.

Hungry?  You must have had enough seafood up north .  New Haven is filled with great food, did you know Louis' Lunch is where the first hamburger was served in the United States and we are also the Birthplace of Best Pizza in the country.  One more mile....

Tonight let's go to Modern Apizza, Pepe's and Sally's get most of the press so there could be a long wait. Modern's on State Street so we don't need to travel down to Wooster Square,  especially with gas prices at $3.20 a gallon.

It has been a long 8 hours since Matt's arrival. The day is about done and time to kick back and relax.  I stocked the fridge with a mini-six for Matt and got some tall ones for me so proportially we should be just about right.

Let the party begin!   Look for the recap in about a week...

Dan, I see your getting the little Flat man into shape! I guess you know Texas is disputing your claim to the 1st Hamburger?

Hi, Dan!  I love this!  I still have Flat James but I need to mail him today or tomorrow.  I'm going to miss him.  He's been a lot of fun, and usually a good house guest.  One more post about him before I'll let him go!  Have fun with Flat Matt!

Danny..  Do you ever sleep?  The burger battle was news around here also, nice to see our tax dollars at work.

Sarah.. Time flies, seems like I just read about Flat James arriving.  It is a fun diversion from real work.

James it going to visit Jeff Belonger in New Jersey.  I think that's really fitting, because Jeff is a West Virginia University alum.  Kind of a full circle thing, don't you think?

Colleen... I thought you were keeping track of your creations... Is Flat Matt up for grabs or do you have a destination for him?

Nadya... Yes.. Busy Weekend.... Cinco de Mayo, a Sunday Run ( 5K if you are ready ) & Birthday.  Do you have any inside connections into the research of Trilobites?  Thought he'd like to visit a world class facility and we might stop by the Peabody at some point.

Oh Oh...Are you planning on putting a Mexican sombrero on poor Flat Matt? Please, don't get him drunk!

I haven't been running in over a week (research to write the stupid thesis is driving me and don't get me started with my student papers!) so I think I may skip it. Besides is Sunday, the day I torture Brian...LAUNDRY and ERRANDS! (add manic laugh here). I'll join you for the next one...when is the next one?

I just emailed Thomas, and hope to hear from him soon. Hopefully, we will be able to take a picture of Matt and a trilobite!

Oh, got your birthday present too! :D

Flat Matt doesn't seem to get tipsy with his mini-beers.  My over-sized bottles tend to pack a punch though, slept in this morning until about 4:00...

Hey Brother Dan!!  Glad to know our little Flat Buddy arrived safe and sound.  Funny that your admin gave that package to your wife instead of to you.....I got a chuckle out of that!  Ah, must be from your long lost sister up north, huh?

Flat Matt likes his beer, doesn't he?  He did a bit of imbibing up here, too, after a long day of yard work and digging for fossils in my backyard and in the woods behind me.  Too cute that you matched your running pants to his, too.

Have fun!!

Some of us offer our guests morning runs and others offer them lazy days by the pool. Wonder if all the Flats will get together after their adventures and compare notes...

Ann... Not sure if the Admin made the name connection but the way my wife told the story it sounded like I received a package from some mystery woman and she wanted my wife to know.

Sharon...I'm sure the Flats will enjoy a long retirement in Florida and appear at specialty functions.

Wow, these Flat Dudes are really getting around! It's been a lot of fun learning more about Rainers and their areas through the Flat travels.

Hi Matt

Well if you ask me - I think since Colleen started this whole flat phenomenon it would only be fitting to have a Flat Colleen.

Lysa... Flat Matt had even more of a treat today.

John... This is only the second leg of Matt's journey and his legs will be worn out when we are done.

Matt... Better be careful,  as I recall back in '69 the girls never liked being called Flatsy's

Dan - I did get a chuckle thinking about that package being treated as it was by your admin - that's sorta what I thought she was thinking when she hand-delivered it to Sandra.

I remember the "Flatsys" from back then - too funny!  One of my sisters still has her collection of them I think.  And you're right, that certainly wasn't a term of endearment.....

Dan...

I am actually surprised at how white Matt is. You would think after all the sun he has had traveling he would at least have a tan :)

TLW...ROAR!

Matt...

Please let us know who you decide to victimize. LOL.

Just so you know The Flats are a great way to throw reality right out the window and into the lake :)

TLW...ROAR!

HaHa.....that is too funny. I think he needs a special running shoe. Pretty soon, they'll be comic book heroes.

Dan you forgot to mention that at Louie's if you ask for lettuce he used to tell people he doesn't serve grass. He also had a ketchup bottle that shot out a red string. He used it on me the first time I went there. At that time it was still on George St. across from the old UI building. Nice post and good memories for me.

Ann... Guess you remember me singin' that jingle.... Always had the tendency to tease...

Ethan.... You are correct, Flat Stanley is a '64 vintage and Matt came a little later..

TLW... I thought Flat Matt might make a good candle holder on my birthday cake,  with all those flames he may get toasted.

Christy... Was gonna reduce those shoes down to his size but didn't get to it,  Maybe for Sunday's Race.

George... Kind of like the Soup Nazi the way they serve their burgers.

Danny... If Colleen doesn't have him scheduled I will send him your way.

Actually I'm not much of a beer drinking, more of wine and the hard stuff (though the ability to drink that has diminished considerably since college days).  Where am I off to yet, I'm sure it's more exciting than my real life trips :)

Hey running Dan,

Maybe it's time for you both to run a marathon!

Matt... Today we are off to a 5k race this morning and maybe a ride around the shoreline this afternoon.  Next week you will head off to a new destination but I am not sure where,  Haven't heard from your Mom yet.

Did you miss your fun with the Trilobites at Yale ?

Lynda...  We're working on the marathon,  first step is to tackle a half next month and see how I do.  Still haven't figured out why my 5k time is getting slower instead of faster.  I received a heart rate monitor for Christmas and slowed my pace to the recommended heart beat... No my body just knows one pace.... Easy!

The running shoes are on and we are off......

Hey Dan,

Maybe the answer for you is to try fartlecking?  I'm sure you've heard of the technique, right? And no, I'm not getting personal here or trying to be obscene.

Just google fartleck or take a look at this link. http://http://www.coolrunning.com/forums/Forum7/HTML/002958.shtml

Have a good one!
