Joan
I had a mover that forgot to show up once. Thought I was going to have a heart attack
Sincerely
Tom Braatz
Joan, I like the idea of color coding the boxes. I usually just number them and write the room that they go to on the box. When I number them, I list the numbers in a notebook describing what's in each box. We move every few years (for the capital gains exclusion) so it seems like it was pretty easy last time. You have given me some things to think about with our next move. You've also made me a little nervous! :)
Joni - you had the right plan. I wish I had been as organized when we moved to NC. It just seems that this whole move is presenting some real challenges for you. I'm gonna say an extra prayer that the rest of this deal goes smoothly, the closing is uneventful, and you are on to your new abode - dogs and all. Just take your time, the boxes will still be there the next day, and the next day, and the next ... You get the idea.
Wish I were closer, I'd come help you get them in the right rooms.
It's always something with a move, isn't it? That color coding idea is fantastic for making the move in as easy as possible. Having been through quite a few moves myself, the only suggestion I'm able to give most people is to save as much money as possible. You never know when you'll have to come up with money for more storage space, more boxes, or that unexpected motel room.
The best suggestion made to me as far as saving money was to buy my boxes through UsedCardboardBoxes.com. I saved a ton of money compared to buying new, the boxes (and other accessories in the moving kit) were delivered by UPS, and I got them in 2 days. It saved me the hassle of going to find cheap/free boxes, and paying outrageous prices for new boxes.
Sorry to hear your move was so rough. It's amazing how the little things turn into big things so quickly. Hope you're soon settled and all this is all but a distant memory.
I have enjoyed your posts about this process. Things never go quite as planned, do they?
You were definately on the right track with all the organzing. It is very difficult to try to move everything after 25 years! I hope you find your new home soon! Living at the Red Roof Inn can get old!
Tom...I think that would blow my mind too!!
Jen...hope the system works for you. Lets assume my situation is an "exception"
Carol....thanks for the encouragement we're almost there
Thanks Bob....the tip about the extra money was prophetic! in our case.
Hi Holly....glad you enjoyed the reading. What's that saying? about Murphy's Law??
Joan...VERY OLD !!!
Hi Joan, I think I should have flown back East and helped you. I don't think you would have agreed to any specific time on a clock when you have to rely on others. A stiff penalty indeed. Whew, I could have helped with the color coded boxes and the written inventory plus $2.50 memory photo card of what is each box in case it lost or damaged.
