Go Home Young Man- And Populate!

Japan is experiencing, as we are, a troubled economy. But, they have another problem that we do not. The population in Japan is dropping at an alarming rate. In fact, the population of 128 million may well drop to 100 million by the year 2050. Why? In part, due to a decline in the birth rate, (on the average there are 1.34 children per family), and a high incidence in flu-related deaths.  Nearly 22% of Japan's population is 65 years old, or older. Japanese woman

Twelve hour workdays are common in Japan, and the women complain that the long hours worked by their husbands,  inadequate child care, and the high cost of living, are the reasons so many families have opted for no more than one child.

There is a growing concern that the drop in the population will have a worsening effect on the already suffering economy. So, the government has stepped in. Among other things, the government has encouraged Japanese corporations, such as Canon and the country's largest business group, Keidanren, to do their part to aid in assuaging the declining population by letting their employees go home early, at 5:30, two nights a week - they call this their "Birth Planning" program.

I had no idea. Amazing what one can learn about on the web.

Hi Debi, I heard something about this on the news this morning! They do have to increase the population so that there will be young workers to support the aging population!! I believe the elders live to be quite old! I wonder if they get the extra time off with pay?? LOL

Mary, funny you should ask - one of the corporations commented that will also help in that they would pay less overtime 2 days a week - so, sadly, no. That would have been the icing on the cake, tho! LOL

Mornin Gail, It's interesting all that goes on outside of our sphere - often it goes by un-noticed by us. I had a ton of comments out yesterday too, and had lots fun with the two of you... Love you, too!

Hey Miss Pat! Good to hear from you! The only thing missing yesterday was YOU! We miss ya!

Go home early two nights a week. What a heart the Japanese business leaders have Debi. They are killing themselves with the birth rates but still won't lighten up much.

Gary, Thing is, as Mary pointed out,  the people they send home early to 'populate' are the same people that cannot afford more children anyway. So, send them home, with less pay, and consider this creates LESS stress? And we think our politicians are off base...LOL Go figure...
