Starting a business of your own is always a risky venture. There are many people that will try and hold you back, but only if you let them. This business I started a year ago has been a blessing for sure. I always wanted it to be a full time gig, but ... I was a teacher when I originally started my business. My time was very divided. I felt I needed to spread my wings a little more and decided that being a stager was what I wanted to do. So in December I hung up my apple and red pens and plunged into the Staging business full time. Working in today's market and economic climate is risky for sure. I gave up a paying job to try something out that may or may not pay off. There are people that are trying to hold me back, but I won't let them. I now have the time to devote to areas of my business that I didn't before. The thought that thrills me the most is that I get to go after the markets where I really believe I can make a big difference. Getting homes ready for sale is an awesome part of my business. Helping someone to transform their living space into a place that other people feel welcomed enough to want to stay permanently is a gift. I love hearing "I don't want to sell my house anymore. I want to stay." It is music to my ears. That means that I have done a good job for people who needed a nudge in the right direction. One area that I am particularly excited about pursuing is Staging for Seniors. I teamed up today with an amazing group of business owners that provide services for seniors. We will get together and provide informational seminars about the services we provide and how the senior and their care givers may benefit. Anyone who has ever tried to move an elderly parent or family member can tell you how difficult that can be. One of the services that Staged SO Right will offer is getting that home ready for sale. That means someone else will help the parent or caregiver sort through the 30 - 40 years worth of accumulations and whittle it down to what is needed and what provides the most comfort. Providing focus during a typically emotional and chaotic time is awesome. What an wonderful gift to provide people. I could never have pursued the senior staging if I wasn't in this business full time. This type of Staging is very time intensive. Trying to pack up years of living in one place takes time and patience. This couldn't be done from 3 - 6pm and weekends. I am grateful for the opportunity to walk down this path. As I spread my wings and continue to grow my business, I'll use this forum as a log to see what works and what doesn't. I have already learned so much, but know that I have many miles to travel. I welcome any wisdom that you would like to share.

Sheila, congrats and good luck to you!  Welcome to AR, it's a great support system. When I first joined I spent hours going back and reading posts. There is so much you can learn. If you don't find a post on it...just ask, someone will help you.

I see you're from KY, I have family in Danville. We cut off at Elizabethtown when we visit. Beautiful state!

Sheila,

I applaude you on so many levels. You are definitely taking a leap of faith by pursuing your passion in this down economy! Working with the older client base is a great and under-tapped market. With the graying of the baby boomers, it is a market that will continue to grow.

This was something I tried years ago (before staging was really well-known). I contracted with a senior living community to be their "resident designer". I helped formulate floorplans for all new residents and helped them choose what furnishings they not only couldn't live without but would fit in their new homes. Most of these folks had no local family members to help them transition to their new digs. This meant I wore several hats: decorator, counselor, adopted daughter (lol), and uber listener! It was a wonderful experience, one I  don't regret, but one I don't wish to repeat either!!

The beauty of this industry is that there are so many opportunities to explore. As you continue to work your new business, I wish you tremendous success and a multitude of opportunities for growth!

You are an A+ stager everyday that I am at my office I enjoy my purple wall.  My office enjoys your vision on a daily basis.  What a pleasure, I truly understand why client want to stay in their home after you have transformed it.  Girl 09 is your year!  Run no walking.  I see your paragraphs as excitement.

Sheila,

What a great way to expand your business!  Helping your senior community is very commendable.  Although the task of staging for seniors is a lot more labor intensive, the reward is far more valuable than staging a model or vacant.  Best wishes to you for a successful year!

Hi Michelle,  I do worry about the time constraints of working for seniors.  I imagine though doing well in that area will be a sign that I need to expand and bring on other team members who feel the way I do.  Just another adventure in this journey!  Thanks for the good wishes.

Hey Donna,  I do believe that Kentucky is beautiful - I am glad you got to see it.  It is funny because I used to live in Fort Smith, AR.  It is a truly small world isn't it?  I wasn't staging there when I lived there - how's the market there?

I love AR so far!

And, by the way, I know what you mean about the lack of paragraphs. I may not be an English major, but understand the value of a paragraph!

My hat is off to anyone who works with Seniors to help prepare their homes for sale. I don't have the patience to do this on a regular basis, but I know a few stagers who do this fulltime and they have my deep respect.

I worked with a senior recently. He was selling his condo and had moved into a senior care facility. His adult son lived in another city and it was difficult for him to help with his father's home sale. it was a challenge to communicate with this gentleman who was very hard of hearing. Also a challenge to get paid in a timely fashion. I would send invoices along with SASE envelopes and he would still forget to pay. He once sent me a check for a month's worth of staging, then sent a second check a few days later (which I ended up voiding and sending back to his son) because he had forgotten that he had already paid me for the month.

So you senior move managers out there, thank you for the job you do. It is certainly needed.
