In the heart of Maywood, New Jersey, stands a proud fixture ~                                               ~ the Historical Maywood Train Station & Museum !

               Maywood NJ Train Station

Celebrating its rebirth after being renovated 5 years ago, the Historical Landmark adds a touch of 'yesteryear' to this quaint town with its restored makeover which includes some nostalgic advertisements from a different era.

Originally built in 1872, the last passenger trains pulled into the Victorian-style station in 1966, and since then, the tracks that parallel the station have been used for freight only.

For decades the station sat in disrepair, and was threatened with demolition in early 2002.

But the passion for preservation soon took over from the many dedicated individuals who did not want to see the historical landmark disappear - these individuals formed the Maywood Station Historical Committee, and after 2 years of tireless dedication and fundraising, the project became a reality, and the restoration was completed in mid 2004 !

               Maywood Station**

Its current allure includes a brick walkway with engraved bricks from a completed fundraiser that received donations from local residents and station supporters which in return afforded them the priviledge of being a part of the Station's preservation.

The spectacular revitalization drew credit and recognition from many media outlets, and in 2006 the Maywood Station was featured as the backdrop for a Vanity Fair photo shoot involving up-and-coming "alternative country" music performers.

The station and museum now holds open houses and tours throughout the year, to allow members of the community a peek inside the Station House and experience the "living history" through the many pictures, drawings, and exhibits **...

I enjoy the quaint towns in Bergen County and this one looks like it has such interesting history.

Thanks for sharing Sheldon.

I love the before & after picture of the front of the station. It's amazing to think of two people standing in the same place 100 years apart.

Sheldon, love the article. I have a fascination for trains so this hit the spot. Love to hear when communities realize the history they have and step up to preserve it for future generations.

Hi Sheldon,
I love to see towns preserve their history and make it available for the public to view, enjoy and learn from.  This station appears to be very charming.

Hi Sheldon - I love it when towns realize their treasures and make the move to take care of them.  Not too many historic venues have made it to Vanity Fair.....very prestigious!  Great localism post, I enjoyed it too :-)

Hello Cynthia ! - I agree entirely ! I feel it's so important for towns not to just bulldoze through its history and replace everyone with modern fieatures - preserving some character is very important :o)

Sheldon,

I love that...I am a sucker for historic building, houses, commerce, etc.  I take my children on an electric rail ride in East Troy WI to Mukwonogo (I know try and say it 3 times fast) to an Orchard to pick apples and get our pumpkins.  It has become our family tradition, but I have to say the highlight is riding the electric rail.

Hi Rebecca ! I know what you mean ! I love thinking back to how people used to live, what they were wearing, and what life was like back in another era !

I just spoke to the director for this station this morning, and he said they are organizing a children's trip on a Susquehanna Steam Train for some time this Spring, which I know my little boy will love !

...it's good to keep some knowledge of a different way of life before most of our time ...

... thanks so much for the comment
