In the heart of Maywood, New Jersey, stands a proud fixture ~ ~ the Historical Maywood Train Station & Museum !
Celebrating its rebirth after being renovated 5 years ago, the Historical Landmark adds a touch of 'yesteryear' to this quaint town with its restored makeover which includes some nostalgic advertisements from a different era.
**
Originally built in 1872, the last passenger trains pulled into the Victorian-style station in 1966, and since then, the tracks that parallel the station have been used for freight only.
**
For decades the station sat in disrepair, and was threatened with demolition in early 2002.
But the passion for preservation soon took over from the many dedicated individuals who did not want to see the historical landmark disappear - these individuals formed the Maywood Station Historical Committee, and after 2 years of tireless dedication and fundraising, the project became a reality, and the restoration was completed in mid 2004 !
**
Its current allure includes a brick walkway with engraved bricks from a completed fundraiser that received donations from local residents and station supporters which in return afforded them the priviledge of being a part of the Station's preservation.
The spectacular revitalization drew credit and recognition from many media outlets, and in 2006 the Maywood Station was featured as the backdrop for a Vanity Fair photo shoot involving up-and-coming "alternative country" music performers.
The station and museum now holds open houses and tours throughout the year, to allow members of the community a peek inside the Station House and experience the "living history" through the many pictures, drawings, and exhibits **...
... and take a closer look at the beautifully restored Caboose 24542 - the fiery red engine that grabs your attention as you drive down Maywood Avenue.
For tours of 10 or more, you can contact the Museum Organizers through their official website www.maywoodstation.com - or check back to the same website for Open House schedules starting in the Spring. Admission is free but donations are welcome !
