Interest rates will they hold?

Anyone out there have their crystal balls tuned in? I keep hearing the disturbing phrase that interest rates may climb in the near future. I hope not for everyone sake. We need at least six more months of low rates in order to keep fueling this buyers market. The longer that the rate of homes sold keeps rising the more the inventory falls. We all know that when the inventory falls the scales will start to tip back to equal or to even a sellers market which will in turn drive the market values back up.

So I keep hearing little phrases here and there on the news shows when everyone is debating back and forth about interest rates going up if things continue. The debate is that with all the spending the federal government is going to do that they will have to raise the interest rates in order to be able to keep borrowing money themselves from other governments.

I hope they stay down for a while too, but who knows! I feel they must remain lower to get us into a better position economically. We had positive numbers over the past month, we need those to continue.

I'm a little torn actually. I definitely want the interest rates to stay low for the sake of my clients and the economy. The combination of low interest rates and affordable home prices is fueling a lot of excitement, especially among first-time buyers. On the other hand, I wouldn't mind the rates starting to go up a little, so that people "on the fence" realize that they need to really take hold of this opportunity instead of waiting for things to "hit bottom." That's always a risky game to play.

Larry - we are hearing this from variety of lenders as well - rates will keep going up. How fast and how much? I don't know, I wish they would hold steady for awhile. ~Rita
