Actually, the STAR started in December, but it has taken me this long to figure out how to say thanks.   So one day I was talking on the phone with my friend Elizabeth Nieves, about the cancer affecting our families.  Although, it is not a secret in my Keller Williams office in Renton, or community in Ashburn or at Renton Christian Center, I don’t throw it out into public too much.  My clients all know up front that we are in a battle and have been tremendous.  Well here goes to my AR Friends and Family....

My wife, Jessie-Joy, and I have been fighting cancer for over 6 years.   What started out with my obligatory husbandly checks resulted in me finding a large lump in her breast.  Off to the doctor we go and we get the news, breast cancer.  Holy Crap, this sucks, what do we do now.  So first we pray, then we cry, then we get educated, then Jessie decides it is time to kick cancer’s rear-end.  This was over 6 years ago.  Chemo, lumpectomy and radiation and a year and a half later we thought we were clear. Our family was great, church was amazing and the agents in my Keller Williams office were outstanding.  One issue was that the cancer had infiltrated her lymph nodes, so you know there is a chance it will float around and come up somewhere else.

Year and a half later, Jessie is at a work retreat across the State and has major seizures. As my friend Ray said, “She was fine giving a presentation, then started talking in tongues, not making sense and then fell down and had the seizures.”  I am in the process of showing houses to one of the Seahawks and his fiancé and I get a call from one of Jessie’s coworkers.  So the clients are handed off (dumped actually) and I head for eastern Washington at a rather high rate of speed.  By the time I get there, the MRI has found TEN brain tumors.   Now we know where the remaining breast cancer has landed.  This is where it gets a little tougher……

We get back to our great oncologists at Virginia Mason Hospital in Seattle and come up with a plan. Thank God we are at the center of the world’s best cancer research here in Seattle.  I make the doctor tell us the stats on brain cancer and after much prodding (actually I threatened him) he told us that the averages were 6 months to live and that it was considered terminal.   Jessie’s reaction was “heck with that, I’m not dying, I’ve got kids and grandkids to see and we haven’t been married long enough”.  Our Doctor also said that research was going so fast that the life expectancy was getting longer and longer and he had people that had made it 5 years.  Great to hear that, we're shooting for that plus.

Well we called our kids and our folks and our friends at church and work (of course a bunch showed up at the hospital and took care of yours truly who was quite the basket case.) Great prayers, great support and God’s touch on my wife and we persevere.   We have had two sessions of whole brain radiation, several treatments of stereotactic laser radiation (they can pinpoint and shoot lasers into your brain and do surgery from the outside in, truly amazing),  multiple treatments of liquid infused chemo and now pill form chemotherapy.  Plus we had major surgery and a golf ball sized tumor was removed from her left frontal lobe.

At this point in brain tumors it has been over 3 years and we are down to 3 tumors total and still fighting.  Two of the tumors are inconsequential (amazing that we would come to think that way), but one tumor is in the very middle of her brain.  No way to shoot lasers or do surgery, mostly this tumor is untouchable.  Support Breast Cancer ResearchWe are counting on research to find a new type of chemo that will infiltrate that tumor and kill it off.  As the doctor said the other day, “we are racing the research and we need all the help we can get.”  God provides great science, great medicine and great doctors so we are hopeful.

Jessie has great days, good days and some ok days.  She never complains, but does get frustrated, because some of the damage is in her verbal skills.  At times, she can see the word she wants to say, but sometimes it doesn’t come out.  The other day she was trying to tell me something was on the kitchen table and couldn’t get that, finally described it as “where we eat down there by where the chairs are at”.  Her biggest fear is that she will lose more of her verbal skills and will not be able to share her faith and her testimony about God sending huge warrior angels to protect her right before surgery.  Yes, she saw them, can describe them and there is no doubt that as she prayed God sent them.

So back to the AR STAR, one morning at about 7:00 am last December, I am checking facebook and make the comment that we are off to the doctor for chemo.  Next thing I know there is a wonderful post on Active Rain by our friend and blogger extraordinaire asking for prayers for an active rain brother and his wife who are fighting cancer.  You are NOT alone! (PLEASE take a moment to sign this ‘CARD’ for an ActiveRain brother)     Well I am that Brother and Jessie is the wife.

Thank you all who wrote wonderful bits of encouragement for us and lifted us in prayer.  Please read her post again. It is a great reminder that we are always touched by our friends, all their prayers and that there is tremendous strength in God. And then I ask you to say a prayer for whoever God puts on your heart.  Yes the post and the song and your comments made us cry, more than once, I might add.  (Kind of teary eyed again now)  And Thank You for all That, tears of prayer and celebration and faith and blessing are wonderful.

It was Jessie that got me to the right church at a tough time in my life.  It was through her leading me to the Lord that I received the greatest gift of forgiveness and Praise God I got saved.  She is my best blessing. When I first started my real estate business, I put my favorite scripture on my website:   Proverbs 3:5-6   Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not upon your own understanding.  In every way acknowledge him and he will direct your path.

                                        God's Promise

I didn't know how fortunate I was to have gone into business with a company whose values are "God, Family, then Business."  I have a sign in my office that I found about a week after we first found the cancer six years ago that says, “Do not worry about tomorrow, God is already there.”

We continue to trust in the Lord’s blessing and healing.  Neither Jessie nor I can adequately express how much we appreciate our family, friends and clients who pray for us and support us so well. We are truly loved.  We firmly believe that together we all are going to kick cancer’s butt.  Our strength lies in the fact that if she doesn’t live as long as she or I would like, we know exactly where she is headed. Remember lift others in prayer, have a servant’s heart and Trust. God hears and answers every prayer.  And thanks Elizabeth for the love and tears.

Gary what a touching story of your faith, love, and hope. I can relate very well to the battle you have endured. My father died of lung cancer 15 years ago. My baby sister died of colon cancer 7 years ago.

Now my older sister is kicking breast cancers ass. I'm amazed at the strides that have been made over the last 16 years of following the cancer beast that ripples across my family. When she was first diagnosed she pretty much gave up. She thought with the past experiences we had been through it was inevitable. I told her in my gut I knew our dad and baby sister wouldn't make it but honestly thought she was going to be OK.

It's been 3 years now and she continues to show no signs of it's return.

Good luck on your journey and hold on to your faith. It's the one thing no one can ever take from you.

We continue to trust in the Lord's blessing and healing.

Good evening Gary,

I'm so sorry that Jessie is going through this.  There's too much cancer in our society.  May God be with both of you, to comfort and protect you.  During this battle, here are two quotes that you might find helpful.  Have you seen them before?

"Laughter in and of itself cannot cure cancer nor prevent cancer, but laughter as part of the full range of positive emotions including hope, love, faith, strong will to live, determination and purpose, can be a significant and indispensable aspect of the total fight for recovery."
-Harold H. Benjamin, PhD

According to University of California, Irvine Professor Lee Berk, "If we took what we know about the medical benefits of laughter and bottled it up, it would require FDA approval. Laughter can lower blood pressure, trigger a flood of endorphins - the brain chemicals that can bring on euphoria and decrease pain, and enhances our immune systems. Gamma-interferon, a disease-fighting protein, rises with laughter. So do B-cells, which produce disease-destroying antibodies, and T-cells, which orchestrate our body's immune response. Laughter lowers the flow of stress hormones, which suppress the immune system, raise blood pressure, and increase the number of platelets, which cause clots and potentially fatal coronary artery blockages."

Gary and Jessie,

When Elizabeth wrote that post I knew who she was talking about immediately.  And my heart broke in a million pieces for both of you.

I am humbled and honored that you have shared your story openly with all of us, as we ARE family and it's better to share your burden.

God is ever present in our lives no matter what the circumstances.  He has the capacity to love us unconditionally and to bestow his touch without us ever asking.  That is the miracle of faith - the happenings of miracles that we don't expect and can't explain.

When we try to shoulder a burden while keeping it inside it can feel like the world is closing in on us.  It's when we share that burden that we can actually feel life again and know that we are not alone.  You and Jessie are not alone.  Ever.

I don't believe I am alone when I say --- if you ever need a shoulder to lean on, an ear to bend or a hand to hold onto, you can call on any of us - or all of us.  We are here for you both.  We are your family and proud of it.

God bless you both with His guidance and healing touch.

Denise - Sorry for your loss, but totally thankful that your sister is winning the battle.  Cancer is so awful, yet the research is creating many winners.  15 years ago we would have been hosed, now we are holding off brain cancer.  And taking huge comfort in God's love.

Bruce - Everyone knows I have a sarcastic sense of humor.  Jessie and I laugh lots (stupidity of cancer, can't remember a word, baldness - been there 3 times).  In fact our middle grandson wants to visit with his "bald grandma".  We get or strength and JOY from the Lord.  And yes we laugh a lot.

I remember the day we were at our Dr appointment and he came in with his new iPhone (first day they came out)...  here we were cracking up about that for over 5 minutes, looking at the new toy, and his silly obsession.  Finally got down to business. We said nothing new this visit, and went back to laughing with him.

My dear brother Gary,

Althouth I knew your story, I cried through it again. Thank YOU for sharing this here and now. I KNOW (as I have read through the comments) that it has touched many. So many of our lives have been touched by this horrible disease. Yours and Jessie-Joy's testimony is a wonderful reminder that God is bigger than this aweful disease...that He truly in in control. No one can read this without feeling the strength of yours and Jessie's faith and courage...and PEACE. That peace ONLY comes from our Heavenly Father.

The day that I wrote that post, I wanted so badly to wrap my arms around you and Jessie...to shelter you from the pain...if only for a little while. Each comment that our friends wrote were another set of arms wrapping around you. I felt it, and I KNEW that you would feel it also. I never cease to be amazed at how God brings us together in His love.

Gary, I will NEVER forget the love and concern you showed for me when I needed it the most. Te amo, mi hermano! May our Heavenly Father continue to hold you and Jessie-Joy in His loving arms. May you always rejoice and testify to His goodness and faithfulness. ~GBU~

Fran and Kathy,  Our sharing is to give thanks and encouragement to others, and yes it is His will. We sure appreciate the prayers though.

Kelly - yes it was the right scripture for the first one to learn and still the strongest one that I hold on to in my walk with Jesus.   Glad that connects.

Russ,  Wow, I guess you do know the shoes we are walking in.  Jessie read this and said, "wow that's great".  She is thrilled that you two have had so many good days. We will push for 12 more years to try and keep up with you guys and yes every single day is huge.

Becaus of Elizabeth's post, I prayed for you and your wife before I knew who you were and I will certainly pray for you both now that I know your names.  God Bless!

Donna - It is really God's molding and healing that got me to the point where we could get stronger in this mess rather than fall apart.  Years before, if this would have happened, it could have been a totally different response, so as Barb said above, He gives us what we can handle.   I hope our inspirationalness can help some others.  Of course Jessie is just inspirational by nature, so it is easy for her.

I can't say that our entire company has the philosophy of God, family, then business, but at least they are believers, and I never pull any punches when making it clear, what I believe. And God is able to do exceedingly, abundantly, above all I ask or think. And He is the great physician.

Gary, You and Sally are two very courageous people.  I believe in the power of prayer and you've both had many and will continue to receive many. I'm sure she will stay on the road to recovery with all these incredible AR members to keep sending prayers.

Gary, I remember Elizabeths post and I had no idea who she was talking about, but God did. So I offered my thoughts and prayers to whoever it was. You have shared your story with such integrity and openness. Thanks for doing so. I will continue to pray for you and Jesse and God's continual hand on your lives.

Hi Gary-I read this yesterday and had difficulty in responding...Cancer hits a little too close to home for me as well!  The message you extend...love...faith and hope...is truly inspirational.  No I am not sick..but someone who I love and adore is..and what strength...and faith and hope he too portrays!

The human spirit is so strong...and just as Russ says...everyday is a good day!  You both are in my prayers...I know..personally...God Listens!  :)

Gary- Thanks for sharing your uplifting testimony. It is stories like these that affirm to us that unfortunately God doesn't promise us that we will not endure suffering, but that when we do ,he will never leave us and will us up to endure.

Praying for you and Jesse- God's Blessing

Wonderful testimony of your love for God and your love for your wife. Only the love of Jesus can be so faithful and keep us steady through the trials of life. Faith worketh by love and your faith is working, brother.

God Bless

Maryellen - I often am speechless too, and my friends can't believe it.  God is good.

Amber - It seems nearly every family has been hit by cancer.  I am happy that research is advancing so fast that survival is increased.  Sorry about your stepdad and praise God for your aunts.  Thanks for Isaiah 54:17.

Collleen - Thank you, Jessie is a battler, indeed.

Michelle - We appreciate the continual prayers, then, now and in the future.

Lisa - yes, God is the great physician, interesting the atmosphere in a office when the believers are a strong part of the leadership.  I was in State Government for many years and you wouldn't even dare say something out loud.  So it is powerful and refreshing.

Pat - it is a long fight so far, and we are going to make it much longer until we get the result we are praying for.

Carole - Jessie is actually more courageous than I am.  Prayer in mass numbers has given her more and more strength and courage.

Mara - most everyone remembers the first post that Eliz wrote, which shows she is a tremendous writer and I guess it is a compelling story.  And yes in this life, "the strength of one strengthens us All".

Missy - Stories like these can only be shared one way I guess, from the heart and from the gut.  God's hand is on us continually, and I believe that is also a huge part of the story.

Midori - In writing this, I have found a bunch of people that are intimately touched by cancer. Way too many. I will pray for you and yours.  Yes the human spirit is strong, but so much stronger when we are assured that God is listening.  You see, only thing I ever got from you was a great smile and that things are going along fine.  I guess another lesson for me is to never take for granted what trials others have.

Sharon and Greg - Jessie's testimony is uplifting, I get crabby at times. You are absolutely correct, we have never through this all felt that God was not with us every minute and every step.

Nicholas - I guess it is a wonderful testimony when you write it down, seems it is just what we do on a day to day basis. Faith worketh by love.... yep like that one.  Our faith is strong.

Kayla -  You are welcome and you are right on top of it, the time for prayer is the exact moment we feel it is needed.  Thank you.

Nelya -  I hope the tears were cleansing, most times they are for us. Usually more joy and amazement than sadness. We appreciate your prayers. Aren't we fortunate be in Seattle where some of the best cancer doctors and leading research is happening.  When we moved here from Eastern Washington in 2001, God already knew we would need to be close to these doctors.

Mo - Thanks for the prayers, always and always and you are correct God has already gotten us through some of them, and we are trusting Him if and when there are more.

Hi Gary,

Oh my, I missed this post, just found it now as a result of Liz's link love for you.

Sounds to me like you've both made a lot of progress here. There are a great many folks who've lived many many years with cancer. We've been fighting it too in our family too for the past couple of years with a 7-year old.

God bless you both!
