So what happens when a high school basketball wins by say 100-0

I can not believe all the publicity the recent girl’s high school basketball game is receiving.

If you have not heard two Dallas private schools recently played a basketball game and the final score was 100 to 0. The loosing team has been on several national television shows. Mark Cuban the owner of the Dallas NBA team to be a guest at a game and sit in box. Invited by one the large shoe manufactures to attend the NBA all star game.

The girls on the winning team have been accused of running up the score and poor sportsmanship. The winning school has issued an apology and offered to forfeit the gate. They admit their performance was not very “Christ Like” I guess a message to the girls there is to play the game the way Jesus would. Does the school officials not realize Jesus could make shots from half court all day is he wanted to?

The coach of the winning team made a statement that he disagreed with the schools view, and that his team played to win. So the school fired him. I think instead of inviting the losers to attend a game Mark Cuban should hire this coach as his professional team plays so pooly.

So I guess the next debate will be should we even keep score at high school games, we don’t want any one to feel bad.

Now I wonder at what score would it have been OK to win say 75-0, 81-0, 50-0? I guess anything except 100-0.

Richard, This is a tough one.  This all became 'political' when it made the news.  If it hadn't 'gone public' there wouldn't have been any issue.  Maybe if the coach had put in his second string player or bench warmers at some point that may have been better sportsmanship.  Unfortunately right now he's a political hot potato and whoever might want to hire him based on skills might not because it'll be on the news that the 'So and so school' hired the mean coach!

Richard,

My husband was a high school football coach for 30 years.

You play to win but you let everyone play when the game is assured.

If every girl on the winning team played it is hard to tell your players not to score.

However, if the coach kept the first string in to make it 100 it is unconscionable.

Brian,

Thanks for your comments.  I don't know if there were enough players to put the second string in.  I also think it was all political, and has been blown out of proportion.

Brenda,

These are two very small schools in the Dallas area.  I'm not sure if he played everyone or not, but  you make a good point.

Thanks for your comments.

Talk about being blown out of proportion! Part of going to school is supposed to be to prepare kids for the 'real world', 'life', etc.. A large part of life is succeeding...in whatever it is you pursue. Be the loudest activist, run the fastest race, sign the biggest account, sell the most homes, save the most pandas, etc.. Life is not fair, it is not equal and it does not stop to let others catch up. Kids today are far too coddled in many ways. You lost in a landslide! Bummer, get on with it! No one on that team cured cancer or brought peace to the planet and yet tv programs are acting as if they are celebrities. Give me a break! -S

Hi, Richard:
Love this story - I disagree with Stephanie above (warning, Sarcasm):  If you don't win, whine and complain and don't stop until you get what you want.  Losers are entitled to the spoils of war, just as much as the winners.  Every thing should be equal... Win at what ever the cost.  Cheat if you have too...

At least, that's what our kids are learning nowadays.

With all of the focus on the coach who won, why isn't any one asking the losing coach, "Why didn't you forfeit the game at half time?"  What kind of coach thinks, "Well, they shut us out for the last two quarters, but we are bound to close the gap starting after half time..." Is there any shame in throwing in the towel when you know you are beat?

Just my two cents.

Stephanie,

Thanks for your comments.  I agree our kids are getting soft.  Maybe the loosers were texting each other instead of playing the game.

Michael,

Thanks for your comments.  You also make some good points. Perhaps the wrong coach got fired.
