Understanding keywords to maximize them in your website will drive traffic to you. According to Wordtracker, correct terms for your area/ niche market may not always be the right thing to do. This can be further substantiated if your blogs or websites are never found, or consumers never do find you. But if you understand how your consumers are finding you, understanding what they are ultimately searching for, then you could pierce through the veil, apply more of what they want throughout your online presence. Not knowing what keywords are often used would put you at a disadvantage for Search Engine Optimization in your market.

There are tools you could use to drive more traffic to your online presence:

Free Google Analytics - Create a Google account and track detailed statistics about the activities on your website. I specifically like:

- Content Overview - which shows what pages are most viewed
- Keywords
- to understand what keywords are used by consumers to find your site
- Traffic Sources
- to identify where the traffic sources are coming from (organic or referrals).

Sign up for a Free Google Analytics account here. Read also, my previous Featured Post on Sign Up For Free Google Analytics tool.

Along with the Free Google Analytics tool, you can use Google's Keyword Tool to experiment with new keyword ideas.

Google Keyword Tool

There are many information you could digest from the Search results page.

(1) You could see an approximate search volume based on the keyword you entered.
(2) You could see other alternatives keywords used in searches and how many times it was used.
(3) Play with the drop-down menu. You can select Broad, Phase, Exact and Negative to see the different search results.

Finding relevant alternatives of Google Keyword Tool

Google uses these results to figure out how much to charge for their AdWord campaign (pay-per-click) but you could certainly study the keywords consumer use for your market.

When you understand the keywords that are used in consumer searches, you could use them to build quality blog contents, title your blogs and headlines with them. Through your keywords, you could build a successful online presence.

Tip of the day:Tip: I am a niche market marketer. I do not like vast and generalization. It takes too much time and energy to get where I want to be. I prefer to use niche markets and target concentrations to focus on what buyers and sellers are searching for.

WordTracker is a paid subscription even though you can sign up for a 7-Day Free Trial. Find relevant and alternative keyword searches in your area.

Loreena, key words or tags as ActiveRain likes to call them are like flags pointing to your blog. They ()Meta Tags) are also important in order for people to find your web site. Thanks for the link

Very good post, Lorena. What is oftentimes overlooked by many is that keywords are actually synergistic; that is, after your site is indexed and found under the key phrases you have worked at optimizing your site for, the engines start finding you under portions of those phrases and combinations of those words.

A good example is our site: originally optimized for "Online Marketing Services for Realtors"it now rank for "for Realtors" and other combinations--500 in all!

There are many other components to making this happen, but keyword phrases are certainly one of the most important components of good search engine placement. It is important, then, to choose those PHRASES carefully.

In closing, we have a client www.tietzhomes.com who is on page one of Google for many different terms, including one we did not optimize him for until 14 days ago: Antioch CA Short sales. They have 17 homes in escrow and are doing very well with this classification. Good keyword PHRASES make for better search placement.

Loreena, I subscribed a long time ago, but haven't looked at Google Analytics lately.  Thanks for the reminder.  The keywords that cause people to land on my community blog always surprise me -- sometimes it's a person's name, an address, or an event.  It's good to keep checking and see what's working and what's not.

6:14pm • #39

We've found clients see more qualified leads from the more specific searches they're discovered for. Searches some of those those tools might not turn up. Sometimes these are rare searches, but very successful connections to an actual home buyer.

For instance, indexing for specific frisco tx developments, neighborhoods, streets, and areas of town might bring a buyer with a much better feel for what they want then the one who's searching the obvious like "frisco tx homes."

Here's an example of a company being discovered for some obvious versus some specific key phrase searches. It doesn't necesarily correlate to eventual sales, but it proves that search discovery can be valuable at a much more specific level AND that being indexed for as many specific areas as possible is potentially lucrative.

Loreena, This is a very well written and targeted post.  You are correct.  I will soon put up a post about HubSpots keyword tools.  These are not free.  However, with their tool you can rank the relevance of keywords, see the amount of monthly searches, the difficulty of increasing your rank on that search, your actual google placement on that term and -- the best of all -- your competitors placement on those terms.  You also can see as you rise and fall on different search terms over time.  It is very cool.

I agree with Tim that Active Rain should include analytics on its blog -- especially the new outside blogs -- so that we can track their growth over time.

Thanks for this post.  It is excellent.

Thank you for your post, over the years I have noticed that many of these so called tools are totally and purposely flawed. They are designed to make you purchase more keywords.  Googles business is all about profit.  They tend to have consumers of their product focus on industry words and not commonly used consumer search terms. A slight misdirected goose chase.

Consumers are less likely to user terms such as "Atlanta real estate" and will focus instead for terms that focus on their own needs.  "Atlanta homes for sale" Agents need to ask themselves will a consumer really use the term "real estate" if they are looking for a "condo' or a single family home?  I have tracked and stored my own data for over 11 years, and have exhausted positioning possibilities on the consumer side.

Loreena... You can never do enough SEO optimization.  It's an ongoing task, as you suggest.  Thanks for the great posts and information which we all can use.  I too think that Google Analytics is great.
