When I first started my sites I was number 1 on yahoo and not even on the first page on google. Since optimizing my site, I have moved to around number 2 on google and down on yahoo. I know google is the main thing, but there is some traffic to get from yahoo. Any input would be great.
The more the merrier..check many sites..and on the ones you score poorly..concentrate of adding those to the pack. Dogpile was a quick way to check several at once.
Hey Rob,
When it comes down to it; Google and Yahoo are like two old professors that try and teach their students the same subject in different ways.
So first let me ask you... what did you do when you "optimized" your site?
Also, have you started link building recently?
The biggest difference between Google and Yahoo is how the look at external links coming into your site. Google looks for quality links while Yahoo is a big fan of sheer numbers.
Additionally... it may not have even been you that did anything. Google and Yahoo change up the way they rank pages on a consistent basis. It keeps SEO professionals on their toes and helps to prevent exploitation by black hate SEO practitioners.
The higher you can rank on Google the better. Focus on that. If you rank well on G you should rank well on Yahoo. That being said I am somehow lost on yahoo all the sudden but normally rank high and my google numbers are shooting through the roof... go figure.
Shane, yeah that is what I am seeing too.
Shawn, I optimized my own page first and once I started link building is when my yahoo placing went down. I have a handful of good links, but I also have a lot of links period. Not as many as some other people, but a lot.
Although they continually change ranking formulas, another thing that helps is how long you have your domain registered. The rationaile was initially that a company who has their domain registered for the next 10 years is more stable than the company (or person) who has it registered for only the next year or two. I"m not certain if this is still one of the many factors in ranking, but it can't hurt.
Google is king, unfortunately? Wherever the consumer goes, we must follow.
Does updating the MLS IDX data mean the site content has changed? I have a bet going on that one. I say no, they mean hypertext.
Yeah, I try to follow google, but you can get business from yahoo so it would be nice to come up high on that one too. Get the best of both worlds!
Google has 65% of the market share.
Optimize Google first, Yahoo second, MSN thrid.

Rob,
That is definatley strange that link building actually lowered your yahoo ranking. Yahoo may have started to follow Google's lead. Make sure you are focusing on "quality" and "professional" links.
One way links (links coming in to your site without a reciprocal link to the site the link came from) are considered quality and much better.
Yeah, I thought it was odd. I don't know that the link building is what dropped it, but it happened around the same time and the sites above me have next to no links. It is really odd.
