As settlers began to begin farming in the Denver area, there was quickly a need to transport water from the nearby rivers. The Little Family settled in present day Littleton, just off of present Sate Fe Drive, and began making plans for a water system to supply the water needs of the area. The Little Family began to farm in the area and also built a flour mill which provided an economic center for the community to grow upon.
In 1871 the Denver and Rio Grande Rail Roads reached the area, and ran right through Littleton. By the time Littleton was incorporated as a city in 1890, there were about 250 residents living in Littleton.
