I NEVER THOUGHT SCHOOLS WOULD BE NEXT...

I heard some unbelievable and really unfortunate news tonight.  A private catholic high school, Loretto High School, is closing its doors after 50 years of teaching girls how to succeed in the world.

It is the latest casualty of the downturn in the economy.  Only a few years ago they just finished a major renovation of the school.  They had the highest number of students they had ever had.  How times have changed.  The extry exam for next years freshman was attended by 80 students.  This is when reality hit and they have decided to close their doors.  It is a sad day.

Wow. I am surprised by this news also. I guess in this economy, nothing is an exception to the rule. Unfortunately, education also.

Paula,

Are you kidding?  Our public schools in greater Tulsa are so bad that the private schools are thriving!  This is hard to understand!

Hi Loreena!
I guess its why I was so surprised...it seems like private schools would be safe.

Hi Bob!
Personally, I wish they were all Charter Schools because I think public schools would be so much better if there was accountabiity.  Our public schools are having their budgets seriously cut, but no closings yet!

Hi Kat!
I agree...it is tragic!

Hi Paula,

I agree, what a sad day for education.  As well, I feel for those families having to figure out what to do next given that St. Francis High School (an alternative choice) is at capacity.

Paula - The news about Loretta is quite sad.  My daughters attended St. Francis High School, and my son went to Jesuit.  I can remember when we had 4 catholic high schools in Sacramento.  If Loretto actually closes, we will apparently be down to just 2 according to news accountings.  I understand Christian Brothers has also closed.  I had no idea they were no longer operating until yesterdays news reports.

Apparently the news reporting yesterday that there would be just 2 Catholic schools left in Sacramento, wasn't exactly accurate.  Christian Brothers High School is still open and operating, according to their website at: Christian Brothers High School .

I also agree with your remarks about charter schools.

This is really sad, I agree.  A small town in the Columbia Gorge - Cascade Locks - announced last night that they are closing their High School. No money in the budget to keep it open.  Education has - for years -- been seriously defunded as a matter of public policy - federal and state.  I am hoping that there will be changes with the new federal administration.  We need great schools and educated citizens who can think critically.

Paula:  I totally agree that this is truly a tragedy.  Indeed... a shame.  It's too bad some philanthropist could not come forth from somewhere and help fund this school.  Having a all-girls high school was such a major part of so many girls when I was a teen-ager.  Very sad.
