Relaxin' with JacksonI had to Google something this morning and saw that the ever-changing illustration on the home page was a painting by this enigmatic master. Pollock always elicits a reaction, no matter who looks at his work. Everyone has something to say and the reactions are over an enormous range of opinions from the indifferent to outraged to praise for his genius. No one seems to ignore Jackson Pollock.

I have to say that I was just a curious observer until I saw his painting, Autumn Rhythm (Number 30) at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City. The painting is a very large canvas and I sat down on a small bench and just stared at the work of art. For some reason, I continued to do so for more than forty five minutes. I am not sure why but I thoroughly enjoyed the experience. I would include a picture but frankly it would not do any good because the size of the painting is what draws you in on a personal level. I had previously enjoyed the work of other artists that painted in genre of Abstract Expressionism and became interested in learning more about Pollock. I read a couple of books and watched a documentary and the feature length film with Ed Harris. He was a tortured soul of sorts and not always the best example of humanity but the man's story is fascinating. I am a fan of his work and like every other artist I enjoy I do NOT like everything single thing in his portfolio.

One of my favorite works by Pollock is, Painting (Silver over Black, White, Yellow and Red) and is on display at Centre Pompidou in Paris. A couple of years ago, my wife and I had the privilege of spending a couple of weeks in Paris and I was able to see that painting and two others by Pollock. We always enjoy traveling and museums in particular and she is extremely tolerant of my curious nature. Two other paintings are also on display, Number 26A, Black and White and The Deep (one of his last). I wanted to spend time looking at two of the works that were displayed side by side but in this case there was no bench so I just laid on the floor with my hands behind my head and looked. My wife took a picture and we still call it "Hanging out with Jackson". This is in no way any disrespect and I was just enjoying myself. Next time I may have to take one of those small folding stools in our daypack. For your amusement, click on this link for the opportunity to paint your own Pollock! You are guaranteed to have a good time!

Art is a subject about which all people have an opinion. Whether your tastes are for Old Masters, Primitive, Realism, Cubism or any other ism, check out what there is to see in your community. Art appreciation and support enriches our society in countless ways and I think that local art museums and artists that are in my town and yours are worth noting and would make a great Localism Post!

I think Pollock's pictures look a lot like our national financial plans :)

I saw that on Google this morning, too.  I always liked Jackson Pollock.  At first glance it looks like totally random splatters on the canvas.  But upon further investigation (staring at it for a moment or two).. you can see that there is a very strong organization of color and form.  It's far from random, and quite carefully constructed.

Happy birthday Jackson!

Russell - I have an Art and Antique Appraisal Certificate and when we were studying Jackson Pollock, I could not really get too excited about his paintings.  My husband always said they are like his 4-year old  granddaughter's painting.  I'm for the Old Masters and lately Mort Kunstler's Civil War paintings.

I think Austin has a wonderfully exciting Art Scene and it would be very cool if you posted about that in your blog. I also wanted to mention that your wife puts up with a lot of your humor and mischief but I am sure you are worth it!

Good Morning Russell-I took Art History a short while ago and I sure did learn a lot that I never knew. Art is definitely something wonderful in our world.  Great photos and you gave me an idea for a blog. it is good to see you. Have a great day.

P.S.-My fav work of ART. The colorful guy laying on the floor. :-)  First the bear and now this I love it. I like seeing this side of YOU. :-)

Russell, Pollock was truely one of the great American Masters.  Utill you have actually seen them in the flesh it is really difficult if not impossible to get their power.  However, for myself, I was more partial to his buddy Franz Kline.

Karen I started laughing as soon as i saw your comment!

Alan Thanks for dropping by, I took a page from your book and just posted about something fun and non-real estate related. You are absolutely correct that it is not just random and indeed well thought out (even in a sometimes spontaneous context!)

RosalindaIt's true, even people who have art as part of their profession do not like all kinds of art. It's what makes art so wonderfully diverse. I too like all schools of painting and sculpture and will check out your reference to Mort Kunstler's Civil War paintings.

Lynne we are incredibly fortunate to have an art community that is alive and well and thriving here in Austin. And yes...I am lucky to be married to someone who enjoys my sense of humor as well as adventure!

Pat it is so good to hear from you my friend. I am glad that you are doing better these days and have decided to grace us with an appearance. I need to see what you have recently posted and cannot wait to see what I may have inspired!. To tell the truth, my wife would agree that I am a somewhat "colorful character"...

Charles Thanks so much for dropping by, you are right, seeing them in person is what makes a huge difference, I am also a fan of some of Kline's work too!

Russell, I love the looking at the paintings on the wall from the floor. That gives another perspective as well. Paintings definitely mean different things to different people. That is how art is.

Bumper Sticker..  "Just because no one understands you, does not make you an artist.."

I like Western Paintings.. you know ones with horses, guns, cowboys, indians, bluebonnets, mountains, windmills, cactus, old shacks with smoking chimneys, cowpokes, cows, mules, snakes, teepees, big bucks, forts, thunderstorms on the prairie, roundups, saloons, etc..

But lets toast to Jackson Pollack today... Cheers.!

Marchel I have been there twice and still not taken in everything there is to see!

Hi Russell- Shoot, here I thought you were just lounging in your living room surrounded by EXPENSIVE artwork...LOL  My goodness the Centre Pompidou is huge!  Must have been a memorable experience.  I also love art - if I had TONS of money, I would have exquisite works of art for my personal enjoyment.  I don't envy very much in life...but works of beauty, talent and expression...oh yes, I can surely covet those.  I would show you my Pollock imitation except it was BAD!!!  Have a super day, you're the best :-)

Well Russell, you always surprise with your knowledge and interests in so many things! Very entertaining article and actually hands-on! Is there an art museum in Austin that has examples of Abstract painting?

Gail Oh you are really cracking me up. I would at least have one of those cheesy recliners with the beverage cup holder! HAH! You are right about the museum it's very large  (but still smaller than the Louvre-holy mackerel!!!) We are big fans of all kinds of art and always manage to get in a tour of any museums when we are traveling. So I guess you clicked n the Pollock painting link, It was so much fun and I wasted way too much time fooling around with it, as I often do with any new toy?!?!? Best to you and have a great day yourself my friend!

Jeannette I do happen to have a wide range of interests and you are right that O always seem to enjoy myself. There are some great venues and museums here in Austin but (and I am going out on a limb here) the only collections of Abstract Expressionism are not very good. In my layman's opinion they are pretty much left over's...

Anne I always appreciate you dropping by and commenting! Thank you!

Erin Ok, yes, I am busted because I am really trying to post more about real estate in the areas where I have worked for over fifteen years but then something comes up and well, I end up posting about Jackson Pollock!?!?!?

Russell...

You never cease to amaze me...an art lover too!  Wish we would have had more time to talk in Austin.

I was in Paris a couple of years ago and went to the Museum d' Orsay all by my self.  I spent the whole day and had a wonderful time.  Art can invoke every emotion there is.

Let's run off to NY for a few days?

Feeling better and plan on staying that way.  Love Ya, Liz

Hi Liz!!! I am so glad you are feeling better and when you are up to it, give us a visit! I would love to talk. The last two times Jason and I have had lunch it went over 2 1/2 hours each time so you would fit right in! My wife and I also spent a day at the Orsay, unbelievable collection and it would take a couple of weeks to scratch the surface of all NYC has to offer! Liz, keep taking care of yourself and we will talk soon.

I will email or comment on your blog about the custom blog page (I am having some difficulty figuring it out myself too)

hey Russell, I can't believe I missed this post. Oh well better late than never. I'm one of those people who thought Pollock was over-rated and abstract art was something for those who can't really paint. That shows you how little I know.

Seeing the Ed Harris bio pic of Pollock was one of the things that got me into abstracts. I owe a lot of my new career to both of these guys. You have great taste in art!

P.S. I sent you a bigger version of your blog header a few weeks ago to fit the new Rain format. If you didn't see/receive it let me know and I'll resend it. Have a great weekend buddy!
