Why I hate ice.......

By
Real Estate Agent with Century 21 New Millennium

I grew up in Jamaica, that's probably enough of an explanation for why I am not fond of Winter weather.

I actually like snow just fine.  I would prefer not to drive in it but I can certainly appreciate its beauty.

Ice on the other hand I have no use for.

Today I had class at noon.  Against my better judgment I decided to try to make it to class.  After all my husband had left hours earlier and he didn't seem to have any problems.

I bravely jump in my car and get ready for my journey.  I should probably add that I am petrified of Winter driving.  Also, I drive a rear wheeled drive car.  I really do like my car and I feel very cute and sporty in it in the Summer.  However, in the Winter it really is quite the menace.

Back to the story,

I jump in the car and proceed to back down the driveway.  Oh wait that's where the story ends.

My car is stuck in the ice IN MY OWN DRIVEWAY!!!  It will neither go forward nor backward at this point only sideways!  To make matters worse I can't even walk back into the house because the driveway is a sheet of ice.  For a moment I wonder will I be stuck in my car, in my own driveway until my husband gets home?

I am able to "bravely" skate my way to the lawn and make it back in the front door.

When I get a hold of my husband he suggests that I skate back across the lawn and across the road to the construction site across the street and try to get some sand to use as traction (forgetting of course that the sand is also covered in snow and ice).

However, I wisely vetoed this plan thinking if i'm this much of a menace in my own driveway then you probably don't need me on the roads.  So I cancelled my class, which is probably what my students were hoping for anyway and I am spending yet another day at home with my kids.

Hi Stacey-Ann --- as far as Ice goes, I'm not sure anything less than a tank is very good! But 4 wheel drive, AWD, or even Front wheel drive helps.  I'm glad you cancelled the class, girl! Hope your weather improves, soon! Sure was a short story HAHAHAHAHAHA!!! ( laughing with you)

I ended up working from my home office today. I was supposed to show 5 houses today. I have rescheduled them for tomorrow. My driveway had a layer of crusty snow/icethat I was finally able to clear this afternoon.

Mary - anything but rear wheel drive!!!  I'm hoping the weather will get better too.

Rich - I saw the picture of your driveway earlier.  I think it was a good call to work from home.  Lets see what excitement the morning brings.

Ice on a road or sidewalk is a terrible problem. In my area, we mostly just had snow, not a big problem.

That;s a good rule to follow.  If you can't get out of the drive give up.  Hope you had a good day.

James - ice is a huge problem on the sidewalks around here.

Paddy - seemed like the safest decision

Ellie - I was afraid it might come to that.

Okay, so that's funny!!!LMAO!! Ummm...I don't think rear wheel drive or sand is gonna help much unless you plan on sanding all the way to school:) Thanks for sharing a very cute story...I'm still chuckling...FYI!

I really enjoyed reading your story. I too have no use for the ice and I am terrified of driving on it.  Once there is ice on the ground and roads it tends to be a menace for days until the weather is warm enough to melt it all away.

Well, I ended up flat on my back thursday while showing houses in the ice. Never show vacant houses after an ice storm.

Trish - That's why I stayed home because I wouldn't have enough sand to get me around all day.

Rebecca - I agree because you get the whole melt and refreeze phenomena.

Rich - My goodness, I hope you weren't hurt.

Hi Stacey-Ann, Now being from Jamaica, I can see why you don't like ice. I wouldn't like it in this situation either.  Thank goodness you were stuck in your own driveway in it and not on some desolate road somewhere in it.  Be safe!

Stacey-Ann, that does really stink.  Thats the reason we don't live where it will snow all the time or have icy roads.  Sure, we have the occasional icy road and if it snows it only lasts one day.  If those days happen, we pretty much don't do anything.  It will go away tomorrow.  From the looks of it, your icy roads could be around for a while.  Good luck and be careful.

Sandy - I agree, it would have been terrible to have been on some random road.

John - That's why I don't live any further North than this

I don't blame you.  I don't do snow and/or ice.  My friends constant pick at me about my "no traveling north of Richmond between Halloween and Easter" rule.
