Happy Ice Day!

I wanted to go to the Active Rain gathering in DC yesterday. I wanted to meet Jonathan and see Pat Kennedy again. Peg and I were really looking forward to the trip - I was going to drive to Columbia, pick her up, and then drive to Pat's home.

Berries in the SnowWe watched the weather most of the day. A couple inches of snow fell early in the day, and I kept the steps swept every hour since it's much easier than trying to shovel at the end. But the weather man/person/people were right on with the freezing rain they forecast for later in the day. Finally I called Pat in the afternoon to tell her I was definitely too chicken, too wimpy to drive over. We don't like to drive in "iffy" weather in daylight, so treacherous weather at night, well, forget it!

About 8:30 pm I couldn't wait and had to call Pat to see who showed up. Six people had made it through the weather. I heard lots of laughing in the background and was able to have a short chat with Jonathan. Much as I wanted to be there, I know we certainly made the right decision NOT going to DC last night.

And the fun didn't stop then. Around 9:30 this morning  I went out to get the paper, slowly walked, slipped and skated down the driveway…and then got stuck. My neighbors across the street were calling, "Go back, not worth it," but I was so close, just another four or five feet to go. And then I got to the paper but – whoa! - I could not move forward to go back to house. One tiny step and I slid back, another tiny step and I slid even further. I called Lee, not sure why but maybe to throw me his cane, or throw me an extension cord, or at least someone would know when I fell. But then I started making progress. Got to the side of the driveway where there was ice on top of leaves and snow where I could dig one tennis shoe heel in. One slow, tiny step at a time, and was able to work my way up the driveway. Whew! Back safe and sound.

Iced Red Berries The moral: stay in the warm house, read the paper on line.

How icy was it? A few days ago in the snow the red berries were beautiful and perky. This morning, the branches touched the ground from the weight of the ice. Oh heck, Happy Ice Day...enjoy!

Hello Margaret, So sorry about your trouble w/ the snow & ice today but I'm sure glad you posted those photos. Are those pics from your home? I was wondering because that is the exact berry bush I was looking for last year. Do you know the name of the plant?

Margaret,

Can't I have any ice or even any cold weather to talk about...I'm very happy in my sunny and 80 temps we've been having.

I'm feeling quite spoiled here with the warmer weather...don't even mind the rain...I think maybe you should get a dog---a husky perhaps---to fetch your paper on winter mornings! (OUCH!) :-)

Margaret, we had a great time but we wished you were there.  I might have to make a special trip to Baltimore one of these days for lunch.

Sara, What a clever saleslady you are! I happen to love the cold weather, so Florida is not in my future.

Lenn, We need to plan a daytime get together. Would be happy to drive to your area.

Ann, There is so much beauty, as long as you are inside and safe.

Hal, The slipping and sliding (after I made it back to the house) was quite funny. It was quite frightening while it was happening.

Connie,Don't wait for get together; start one. Just call a couple of people in your area and then post it. It is  easy and so much fun. We had a gathering in Annapolis last month.

Cynthia, Those photos were taken from my front porch. I don't know the name but I will take a cutting to the nursery and find out for you.

James, You know I would have been there if it were possible.

Neal,Glad you are happy in suuny Florida. Have not spoken with you for a long time. Give me a call when you have a chance.

Mara, Hello pretty lady. I think that husky would have had problems this morning.

Margaret, Any time you come to Baltimore would be special. Pick a day, lunch is on me!

Margaret...

I've been watching the weather on the Easten Seaboard and I'm amazed. I haven't seen winters like the one you're having in many many years. It reminds of the reason I moved to Florida. SNOW!!!!!!!!!!! and I hate dislike cold weather.

Just so you know I'm sitting here with my broken leg wondering why you don't get the newspaper on line. It would definitely be better than falling and breaking a bone or two or three. Geesh...I can't believe you!!!! Please don't do that anymore, it so isn't worth it. Unless of course you like being laid up with broken bones :)

TLW...ROAR!

Margaret, as people were leaving, I realized how icy my sidewalk and steps had become, and then saw the streets glistening.  Driving on snow is no big deal, but even walking on ice is scary for me!  Luckily nobody drank very much except fruit juice and ginger ale, and they all made it to their cars!  It was fun, and we'll do it again in the spring when the weather is better!

Bille, Nooooo no more broken legs or arms. I did break my elbow a few years ago when I slipped on black ice...ouch! I definitely did NOT need the paper, I was getting it for Lee.(he does not believe in computers) Yes I know it was stupid.  The paper is still at the end of the driveway this morning! Thinking about you and your multiple broken bones and I feel for you..at least I didn't trip over the dog... cause I don't have one.lol

Hope you heal quickly and completely. Love to you both.

Patricia, So glad everyone was safe. We don't have to wait til spring. We could get together at Union Station. That is always open and a fun place to be. Simple train ride from Baltimore!

Two posts about ice... I guess you guys had a lot of ice down in your neck of the woods.  Great pictures in both posts.  Stay safe and unless you are wearing ice skates stay off the ice...

Margaret, I hope you are ok...don't imagine you have a lot of padding to fall on and unfortunately the ice is not forgiving. I remember it well and chose to leave it merely in my memories.

Margaret, glad to hear it. A few years ago I bought a friend of mine in Denver an apparatus that fits over any shoe to wear on the ice and she loves it. I got it on QVC. They come in colors or clear and certainly something you might want to consider when walking on ice.

Here is the QVC link where you can also watch a video about them.

Put 40 years of experience to work for you

We don't deal with a lot of ice in Sacramento -- rain mostly. Last week I was heading out the door for a pedicure. Why I bother when I wear boots, who knows, but since my nails are wet afterwards, I wear a pair of rubber thongs to the salon. They're the throwaway kind with the flat rubber bottoms. I stepped out on my concrete deck and went sliding. It was like hydroplaning. I couldn't take a step without slipping. So, I just took them off and went barefoot to the salon.

I don't like going outside when it's raining so you probably know what I think of snow. It's been raining heavily here all day. The paper is still down there at the bottom of the driveway.

Elizabeth, You remember the tip on how to put your boots on after a pedicure.

Russel, Living in San Diego, you don't have to deal with anything other than almost perfect weather
