Attending the latest CAR Mid-winter business meetings it became readily apparent that the GREEN movement has become today's Beanie Baby, the 'Save The Whale' of the 2000's, the latest cause du jour. It's the same 'cause & effect' crowd updated from the 70's - for every effect in the world, somebody will join the cause.

Back then we used to debate, in all seriousness, the prevalent trend toward 'global cooling' caused by pollution and greenhouse gases. Somewhere during the mid-90's, AlGore decided he needed a new career to hang his battered hat on and found enough sycophants to produce a PowerPoint on 'global warming' that won a Nobel Prize. By and large it was the same hack science (and some of the same hack scientists) leading the cooling cause that subsequently lead the warming cause.

But now that that theory is falling into some disfavor, the cause has shifted to 'global climate change'. This is a much mo betta cause because it is at least couched in reality - the global climate does change. Of course the fallacy of this is that humans are almost totally responsible for it. This self-indulgent and self-centered way of thinking smacks of so much hubris and ego it would be laughable except for the fact that it is and will continue to cost us millions to chase unreachable goals based on unprovable 'science'.

Yet everybody from our President to our Governor and much of our media is on the bandwagon because it's the 'in' thing to do. I was reminded of this last week when a gentleman of some stature in our state association boldly stated that in the pursuit of environmentally correct goals, cost was really irrelevant. He was advocating for sweeping mandates that would force every California homeowner with a pre-1979 home to undergo an energy audit (much like the onerous bill from Fabian Nunez we defeated last year). He specifically targeted single pane windows making the bold claim that installing dual pane windows in the estimated 7 - 9 million California homes that still have single pane would have a very noticeable and beneficial effect on OUR PLANET.

OMG! What a set of cajones on this croaker,eh? I wanted to ask him what the resulting carbon off-set would be against the 15 billion or so Chinese burning coal on open hearth fireplaces but I was afraid I'd be stoned by the PC crowd. The PC crowd was much easier to deal with when they were just getting stoned themselves, but even that nostalgic event has gone up in (CO2 emitting, particulate laden) smoke.

If you've read my rants before, you are aware that I am as much in favor of conservation and responsible use of our resources as the next person (as long as that next person isn't Ed Begley, Jr.) But it seems that every hack legislator or hack inventor of some widget or gizmo may now be assured success simply by applying the GREEN appellation to their particular vice, whether or not it makes sense. If it breaks the bank, who cares - we owe it to the environment. If the science is weak - don't worry trust us. If the supporting statistics don't extend more that 30 or 50 or even 100 years, well it just doesn't matter.

Every living thing exacts a toll on nature for it's existence. Man is the only creature that has the luxury of feeling guilty about it. Will that guilt change the outcome? Not one wit. Our planet exists on a geological scale measured in millennia, not decades or even centuries. Right now based on environmental conditions, man is the dominant species on the planet. It was not always so - and will likely not always be so. Dinosaurs once ruled the planet but in spite of not driving Hummers, not emitting greenhouse gases and not spraying DDT, they disappeared from everything but the history books through no fault of their own. Sad to say but at some future date humanity, as we recognize ourselves, will also be remembered only through some historical record.

And the history books will not indicate whether or not my home had single pane windows.

Well, that's just my opinion. I could be wrong.

Gene,

That was one of the most well written blogs I have ever read. I also agree with you completely. The Green movement is in teh end all about money. It is the new impetus that forces a compulsory transfer of it. Thanks.

Thanks for saying what needs to be said, that we human are NOT all powerful in all matters of the universe.

Well, I don't think you're wrong about the hubris and ego of some legislators and Green planet proponents. Same scare tactics repackaged and resold under fancier eco bable. While I recycle and reuse meticulously, in the larger context of the history of our planet, all human activities are insignificant and ignoble. Obviously, these super important politicians are too busy promoting their books/DVD's to watch some of Discovery programs regarding earth's geological/ecological history.

Don't misconstrue my intent here. I do think people should conserve natural resources and become better stewards of our earth. But let's not jump to impractical and improvable conclusion that single or double pane windows will save our planet.

I believe that "The Green Movement" is a plot by our enemies, known and unknown, to destroy the economy of the United States, perpetrated by politicians who have been paid in advance by foreign contribusions to their coffers.

I don't even have to name names.

WOW - thanks. I expected to get blasted here (and probably will before it's done) but always glad to find a few allies. Lydia - I agree 100%. It is imperative to be as eco friendly as practicable. Reuse, recycle, don't waste - all things that prudent people should do anyway. But this GREEN bandwagon is leading us down the wrong path I'm afraid and it will end up costing us a fortune, not to mention the inevitable unintended consequences.

If Lenn said it, it's gotta be true. I'm not sure of the conspiracy angle but seeing as how we're the only nation blindly rushing down this path, it makes sense. In a previous post I wrote about sitting through the 4 hour NAR webinar on global climate change complete with the charts showing that we as a nation can bankrupt ourselves trying to reduce emissions to 1950 levels and making every modification to our consumption of energy and fuel and water and the global inpact will be so miniscule as to be unmeasurable against the expanding consumptiuon of Chine & India. Of course logic has no effect on the Green Merchants- their focus is on green of a different sort.

Gene, I tend to side with Lenn on this but let me give you my reasoning. I know that for enough money you can find an expert to prove just about anything you want. I remember a couple of times watching shows about Ed Begley Junior at first I though he was a nut jub but after awhile you see alot of what he is saying make since. The reason I was willing to listen to him was because he lived his beliefs he didn't just preach about them. Now we have Al Gore in the act. As far as I can tell this  man does nothing at all to live what he is preaching except make money from it. Once I hear him say anything about the subjuect I chalk it right up to the bull _ _ _ _ column.

Hugh, I agree with you about Al Gore. While he's preaching about carbon emissions causing global warming, he's jetting around in private airplane and driving gas guzzlers...I guess normal standards don't apply do VIP's and Celebs...gods have to have their indulgences.

The scary thing is that real people are being effected. I love California! We moved back to Texas from Northern CA. While there I heard a great analogy. California is like a beautiful women she has curves in all the right places. Just incredible to look at. The problem is that she is completely crazy and insane. You have to love her or leave her. We choose to leave. This is one of the reasons.

You are not alone in your exodus. And given the curent budget negotiations which will likely lead to CA being the HIGHEST TAXED STATE in the country, you'd better be ready to welcome an onslaught of people leaving our once Golden state. Sad.

Gene - The comments are definitely right about your approach and your witting style.  You come across clear and your message is not garbled with anger and axes to grind ( I have to learn this technique better, maybe from reading more of your stuff).

I think the green movement is basically two fold.  I am not going into any explanations because it really doesn't matter.

I am clinging to the side that says being good to the environment is profitable for all involved.

No politics.

Thank you for a great message.

Douglas - I agree with you 100%. I believe we do owe it to the earth to be good stewards of our limited resources, to develop more environmentally friendly and sustainable resources and that doing so should be profitable for everyone - after all, without some profit motive there will be no breakthroughs. But I don't agree with the liberal environmental agenda nor do I believe we need to bankrupt ourselves and our economy in pursuit of garbage science and specious goals that are subject to change on a whim every decade or so.

Lenn, I find your remark fascinating, as at the moment Mortgage Brokers, Realtors and Bankers are being grouped by most economists as major contributors to the present, actual destruction of the economy in the United States.  I haven't seen "The Green Movement" on that power broking list.
