Can I get penalized for duplicate content?

OK AR help me out. If I have a post on AR and remove it but post the same post on a different blog, can I be penalized for dupicate content? The post is original content created by me.

Any ideas?

OK so the issue is not a penalty, it is more will the search engines index the new post. Here is an article that kind of talks about how search engines see duplicate content: http://www.pandia.com/sew/439-duplicate-content-3.html

If you really like the post but it's dated, this would be the perfect oppportunity to update it. You might even be able to do it in such a way that you leave the old post(s) up and update them with new information. At the end of the post you can link to your blog with the updated information.

OK so I see the post you are looking to move -not really one that lends itself to an update. It has #1 ranking in google for the title keyword. I'm thinking that maybe change the title on your new blog to make it more about specific condo projects that restrict pets, even if you don't name the specific places - Since this ranks well in google if it were me, I would leave this post here - moving it could be tricky - you never know with a post like this, someone could see it a year or two years from now and chose you to represent them because of that post. There is a chance if you delete the old version that the new one might not come up, or it could show up in google the next day as #1. you lose the seniority I think plus the AR google juice. What is the issue with being in more than one place again? Different locations is good and the best scenario in my opinion because you get inbound links form different sites and servers making you rank higher in Google. You can always write a whole new article and also link to the new article from the old article for more information to the consumer which is what we need to be doing anyway, right?

Here is my suggestion:

Keep the post in both places and create a link to the post you want the search engines to identify as the authority source of the content from the post you do not want the search engines placing authority with.

So if you had your post on ActiveRain and you wanted the post on your other blog to get the authority, you would include a link on the bottom of your post on ActiveRain saying something like

'Originally posted on xyzblog.com'

That phrase would be a link to the specific URL on your other blog where the content is hosted. This tells the search engine who to give authority to. You can really spend hours and hours researching this stuff and the absolute reality is.......no one knows exactly. And if they tell you they do, they are either full of $&^% or they should be working for Yahoo or Microsoft trying to topple the G Giant.
