According to the Journal of Computer-Mediated Communication (who the heck is this?), 302 is the ideal number of Facebook friends you should have to be considered socially attractive.

(I guess getting Facebook friends is a cheaper and easier way to become more attractive than the plastic surgeon or spending the day at the beauty salon...)

I thought it was a lot too, until I went to look at how many friends I have - 355.  How the heck did I get up to that number?

Hi Sara - I don't know if I'll get to 302 friends on facebook.  Right now it's just a close circle of friends.  I guess I need to expand my circle  lol.

My kids do....but I have only tried and true on mine. Don't really need everyone to know my darkest thoughts. :)

I guess I am socially backwards....I only have a handful of friends. I do not need the world knowing my moves!!

And who are they to determine this?  LOL, I have just under 100 myself and never thought I would get to that high of a number.  I am shocked when I see the people with 700 and 800 or more.  You know they can't possibly know all of them...they are saying yes left and right to everyone.

The social networking sites are giving new definition to friends.  I had always heard that if you make it through life with half a dozen true friends, you've done well.  Seems like the 302 target is more like the number of people who find you more (physically) attractive than a rodent.

Sara, I am going to have to disagree with this Journal of Computer- Mediated Communication.  I think it's easy to get 302 friends on Facebook.  Just go out there and ask people to be your friend.  When you have one accept, just go to all their friends and say I know so and so and they are my friend, would you also be my friend.  I think anyone could have 302+ friends in a very short time, but would that really mean you are socially attractive.  I think they are really missing the point, and don't understand the true definition of a friend.

Hey all- Thanks for the interesting comments.

I think the study could be interpreted one way if you consider a Facebook "friend" like you do a real life friend.  It could be interpreted another way if you consider a Facebook "friend" either an acquaintance or just something you are using to build a sphere of influence.

However, here is a story that I think illustrates what the study is trying to say.  A few weeks ago we were interviewing someone for a sales job  (obviously a position which you have to have some degree social skills).  The woman was a great candidate.  After the interview, we did what more and more people do, we checked her out on Facebook profile.  She only had about 20 friends.  One of the other sales people in the office said, I don't know how good she is but I wouldn't hire just for the fact that she only has that many friends.

Granted, I work for an Internet company, so he may have a point.  But to him, having never met this person, she was 'socially unattractive' as a potential employee.  Just some food for thought.  I don't know if Buyers/Sellers would make those sort of assumptions, but you never know.

Wow interesting...I wonder how many potential buyers or sellers "looked" at me on Facebook before considering me.  I hope none because that really should not make the person.  Hmmmm....interesting....

302?...pish!!!  How about 10,000+ like those guys on LinkedIn?  I'm still struggling with that number.  I have a problem remembering my 3 children's names so my brain starts to freeze as I approach 10-grand!

Well with 60 something friends I definitely have a ways to go.  It might be faster for me to make the plastic surgery appointment, LOL.
