It is hard to have a good sale, but a lot of times it is needed.  We offer assistance as one of our services.  Our clients love having the help.  It keeps them on task and helps them make the hard decisions of what to keep and what to get rid of.

Anne- I don't know how successful (or possible) yard sales would be right now in Chicago, but I'll definitely bookmark the article for the spring time!

Hi Anne,

This is a superb article!! As a long time garage sale fan (love to go to them and even to have them every so often) I've always had strong opinions about "best practices" - and you hit them all.

Prices - absolutely - not pricing is the worst mistake, followed closely by lousy signs.  Your advice about signage is great.  In my area you see people making illegible signs on brown cardboard or worse  yet printing off 8.5 x 11" pieces of paper that can only be read by pedestrians.  And you're absolutely on the mark about early birds - be ready for them and welcome their purchases.  And thanks for the reminder to take down those signs!

Really well done!!

Thanks Liz!  I am a big fan of yard sales too.  Especially in this economy.  I really feel they are a "win win" situation.  People need to find bargains and people need to purge and make a little money.  If done right, it can be a great experience.

I understand it is hard work to prepare for a successful yard sale.  That's why I recommend people get some help.  Even if they don't hire a professional, like one of my consultants, they at least need a friend who will stay focused on the task at hand and not let the person spend too much time on memory lane with each item they pick up.

Plus, there is so much extra stuff in the world, it helps to do a little recycling of goods!
