Improved safety in southwest Austin as of January 29th, 2009!

As a Realtor in central Austin, Lake Travis and Dripping Springs I drive quite a bit. Yesterday while showing property I saw something amazing on Highway 290West. The city of Austin had the street blocked off to traffic on highway 290 heading towards Dripping Springs. If you drive in this area, you know getting into the Scenic Brook neighborhood or Covered Bridge neighborhoods from highway 290 is like playing Russian roulette. There is no light, the street curves a bit and is a little hilly and the oncoming traffic is doing around 60 miles per hour. Did I mention there is no street light, so visibility is very poor at night? The only way to get off of Scenic Brook and onto 290 going east is to jump onto what we used to call the "suicide lane". This is a brief turn lane (about thirty feet long) allowing highway drivers to turn into the neighborhood. There have been many accidents at this location due to this unsafe situation.

When I drove past at 9:30 yesterday there were two trucks and about five men working on something. It was about 35 degrees outside and everything was covered with ice, so I did not look too closely. Then when I drove past the intersection again about 11:30 I saw a man in a bucket truck hovering over the highway installing a new traffic light at Scenic Brook. WOW! I was amazed as this man was working directly over two lanes of traffic going about 50 miles per hour. I only wish I had been carrying my camera because it was a sight to see for sure.

So thanks to the brave work of this installation crew, we all have a safer intersection. As you go through the new traffic lights please think of all the lives saved due to this new light. Happy driving!
