After two incredibly long weeks of Real Estate Broker courses, it was finally time to pack up and head east. Not to discount the earth moving material covered in the class, but boy was I ready to come back to Beaufort.
I have read that smell is one of the strongest senses. At times I have even wished that were not true. On Friday, I couldn't have been happier to have a great sniffer!
It depends on who you ask and possibly where you are standing in regards to the answer to the age old, "What is that smell?", here in beautiful Beaufort by the Sea.
I remember my first experience visiting Beaufort.
At the time, I was lucky to have my best friend perched in my lap with his head out the window.
We both were slightly intrigued by the smell that greeted us once we approached the first bridge.
Obviously, he experienced this with a greater intensity, and for the rest of his precious little life every time we wandered, he always knew once we headed home.
I have heard it explained as the pluff mud, the oyster beds, the salt marsh, and once even the "fishy smell".
For the past seven years it means far more.
It means gentle breezes off the Intracoastal and the Atlantic.
It means warm sand between my toes.
It means smiling faces, even at the DMV!
It means dolphins and sea grass.
It means the romance of history mixed with the anticipation of the future.
It means shrimp-n-grits for breakfast and fish for dinner.
It means privately owned business with social conscience.
It means slow conversations and quick connections.
It means memories, friendships.
It means, I am home.
So as I approached the "Smell of Beaufort". I was so very thankful. Life is wonderful here in this treasured coastal town. If you are overwhelmed with the complexities of your surroundings maybe it is time you take a whiff!
