Ozarks cattle are happy but what about the deer?

By
Industry Observer

I snapped a quick photo of some hay spread out on the field by a local farmer and thought, what about the deer.  Then I remembered, they are primarily nocturnal feeders and will probably be out here tonight cleaning up after the cattle have gone to sleep.  I kow cattle sleep at night because one of the local fun things to do in the Ozarks is to go cow tipping.  Just grab a flashlight and a couple of bubbas and you are in for a night of hysterical fun, that does nothing to please your neighborhood cattlemen.  Well, we've enjoyed the snow for a few days and are ready for it to go away so we can get ready for the big bass to start moving up into the shallow water again, so come on sunshine, come on spring, come on warmer days and nights.  Waiting for fishing season is almost as tough as it was to wait on Santa way back when.

Changes in the weather are nice...sometimes. here, was 86 yesterday, will be 56 today! Cow tipping...thought that was just "fiction."

Steve - I've always wondered how many beers it takes for cow tipping to sound like a good idea?  : )

The deer are just fine, they just meander right over to my yard and clean up any and everything they can find.  LOL @Chris Fisher

Gary, not like snipe hunting, even though you actually do both, only one turns out fun for all involved.

Chris, not as many as you might think:)  LOVE what you have done for my website!!!

Lance, thanks for the sunshine man, we sure needed it lately:)

Audrey, you are so much fun, thanks for letting them eat at your place.

Hi Steve,

That's a beautiful picture. Near me, there aren't any deer to worry about but I have felt bad for the squirrels.  I bought a big bag of peanuts to share with them.  Now if I could just figure out what the Canadian geese would like to eat...

Elizabeth, you are truly kind to feed the squirrels, the geese LOVE corn or any such grain, milo, wheat, etc.  They are my wife's favorite bird so she will appreciate you feeding them too!

I love reading your blog....and you truly have a talent for taking beautiful pictures!  We've got about 2 ft of snow on the ground...more coming on Tuesday..and I often wonder what the deer do for food.  I feed the birds...but there's not much I can do for the deer.  Although they treated my garden like a buffet this past summer...so hopefully they're fat enough to make it through the winter!

Why wait for spring? Do what I do and go ice fishing!

WHAT? You go ice fishing Barbara and enjoy it too?  Unbelievable what a lucky man you are married to!  We feed the birds too, Juncos, Sparrows, Gold Finches, Doves, Tanagers, and House Finches as well as the Cardinals and ????? kinds that come once in awhile.  Put out corn for the deer last year but never got it done this year and guess I was feeling kinda guilty when I wrote this.

Hey Steve,

Great post! I thought cow tipping was a myth...so you mean to tell me it's real?! The cows don't wake up as they're being tipped over?? I find this all oddly amusing.
